I spray both sides with copper coat and place it on the pan while still tacky to hold it in place, although usually the bolt holes are snug enough in the gasket to poke a couple through to get them started and to keep the gasket from shifting when setting it back up in place.

I use a thin layer of Permatex #2 on the pan side.
