On my 64 Chrysler I went a different route. I used an electronic version. I went from the cable into an electrical box that held a sensor.  That sensor went to the actual valve, in the engine bay. The nice thing is that my carpet is safe from failing valves,
 and it is easy to get at. 
Not stock, but a step up.

Below is a low cost source for NEW heater control valves. 
Not worth rebuilding. Also, on a rebuilt they do not recharge the capillary tube that auto adjust and reduces water flow to your desired setting. You would need to adjust manually.
