Don, with deep respect, you are wrong.
If you are tired of the current/any discussion, delete it as soon as you see what the subject matter is.
Thank God we have many new members with enthusiasm and many questions. They just ask and us old folks are eager to answer.
So, just delete or answer if you think you have something to add. Then, get back to showing us the wonderful restoration you are doing.

Enough with the tire stuff already. All this info is in the archives, and has been discussed ad nauseum.

I will add my 2¢ to this conversation.

Last year I brought a set of Hankook 225/75R15 for my G cv and had a 3" w/w put on them. It has a visible edge and a small black gap between the wheel and the start of the whitewall, which is raised vulcanized white rubber.

I am extremely happy with the performance of these tires having replaced Cooker bias ply tires that were 10 years old and had maybe 5k miles on them.  They certainly make the car ride beautifully and now I am not afraid when all of a sudden I look down and notice the speedometer exceeding 100!

Again, just my 2¢....John

High quality tires are critical to the cruising performance of our Letter Cars, as well as to our and our passengers' personal wellbeing, and a frequent topic of discussion on this listserver. Though these discussions are all archived in the Forward Look website, accessible using the link in each of these listserver emails, I'm happy to repeat some of what's been circulated before - especially for the benefit of our newer 300 Club members.

Recent consensus seems to agree that the Diamondbacks are superior to the Cokers, for reasons already mentioned here. Sourcing 14" tires especially has become more difficult, especially with whitewalls, and further with wide whitewalls required on our 1961 and older cars.

An alternative tire, that I haven't seen mentioned in this latest chain, is Kontio tires, designed in Finland and manufactured in China. In our next most recent round of 'tires' emails, we saw a handful of members who were satisfied with their Kontios purchase. I recently saw a comment from one of our Scandinavian friends who's had a negative experience with his Kontios, but I have no further comment.

Back to discussing Diamondbacks - In early August 2025, I called to order a set of their 225/75R14 wide whitewalls - largest 14" size available. Speaking with their sales rep, he advised that I hold off on my order until late August because they were running their Labor Day Tire Sale. What a great experience! Purchasing my 4 new tires + shipping + sales tax totaled all-in $1,000! My only upcharge was adding road hazard coverage for an added total $119. So, I first strongly suggest you speak with DIamondback's sales rep to ask whether they will be throwing a sale in the foreseeable future. I cruised to 2 quick 1-day Indiana shows - James Dean Run and Newport Hill Climb - in October totaling 700 miles and my new Diamondbacks performed well.

Also asking Diamondback's sales rep about the manufacture of their tires, he advised that their tires are now fully manufactured in-house. He further commented that they've replicated the top line Michelin redials, to stopping just short of infringing on Michelin's trademarks. He said the tread patterns are nearly identical. My tires were drop-shipped 3 weeks later to our local 300 Club member Jay Hackleman's Chicago Goodyear store and were mounted beautifully.

These latest Diamondbacks replaced 5-year-old 235/75R14 American Classics that were about 5 years and 25,000 miles old. American Classics had been sold by Coker but have been out of production for well over a year and had a myriad of quality issues over the 2-3 previous years. And, prior to the American Classics, I ran Diamondbacks for 10 years and 55,000 miles. These older Diamondbacks had the wide whites vulcanized on 6-ply Vredstein tires and performed well, except that the whitewalls began 'devulcanizing' over their final 3 or so years.

Quickly revisiting Coker - They began manufacturing their own new design 235/75R14 wide whitewall tire in late Spring 2025. Their advertised price is $380/tire + shipping + tax. In addition to Coker's highest price, I haven't seen any comments about these tires, so I found no reason to consider them for my F.

Of course, you may find less expensive tires available with narrow whitewalls.

Hope this helps!

They also sell their own tires too right? Seems doubly expensive to ship out a set of tires and then to pay to ship them back. I've heard they are a much better product than Coker at the moment as well...

Diamondback will put a whitewall of any width & color you like on any blackwall tire you send to them or that they have. Yes, its expensive, but you get 7 to 10 years out of them.

Subject: Re: {Chrysler 300} 300-L Tire and Wheel sizes -

I am slightly confused as to this thread - the correct OE size for the 300L is either 8.55-14 (standard) or 9.00-14 (optional) with narrow approx 1 inch whitewall. These are unavailable except in expensive Specialty sizes - frequently made in small batches using old technology manufacturing processes.

The replacement size evolution for the 8.55-14 is H78-14 to 225/75R14 (also only available in Specialty sizes = Coker or Diamondback at around $300+ ea). The 225/75R14 are roughly 27.5 in OD compared to the original 8.55-14 at 28.25 in OD, so a 235/75R14 at 27.9 in OD would be a slightly better match (also $pecialty only).

The largest remaining non-Specialty 14 in tires are the 215/75R14 (Hankook as previously mentioned - I beileve still available in Narrow White or Blackwall) (Stay away from any ST prefixed tire size as they are Trailer tires rated for lower speeds only) or 225/70R14 (Multiple brands but mostly white letters). Both the 215/75R14 and the equivalent 70 series 225/70R14 are smaller OD 26.7 in OD and 26.3 OD respectively compared to 8.55-14 OE at 28.25 in OD.

The better geometric alternate is the 225/75R15 at 28.3 in OD, but you would need to figure what to do about wheel covers or go to 15 inch Magnum 500 wheels (used on 67-69 Chrysler products) or the 15x6 Optional Road wheels used on 71-79 C bodies or other mag style aftermarket wheels.

You can still order whitewall Hankooks up to 235 75 15s through Tire Rack. My local Discount tire actually received them in about 3 days and they were waiting for me to install them. Put them on my 300L last year. Easy peasy. Just not as convenient as walking in and getting whitewalls like back in the day.
Diamondbacks are better than Coker btw. Less prone to failures and a little cheaper ( not much at all) and especially if you like the correct width whitewalls over the Hankooks 3/4" standard one.

I have this convenient tire conversion chart bookmarked.   https://www.tirerack.com/upgrade-garage/how-do-i-convert-old-tire-sizes
You'll see the stock size 8.55-14 crosses over to a 225/75R-14.
The issue is that size tire is only readily available through some of the specialty tire sellers like Coker Tire and they dig very deep into your wallet for their tires.  Some have great luck with these specialty tires and some don't.
If you go one size smaller, to a 215/75R-14, you can easily get a tire at a local tire shop, but finding a tire that size in a whitewall (like the original) is harder.  A blackwall Hankook tire can be found for under $100..  Go to a 215/70R-15 and you can find some white letter tires if that's your thing, but the tire will be about 3/4" smaller in diameter.
Hope this helps, John Sager

Hello all, I am new to the Chrysler Club/family. I just recently purchased a ‘65 300 L. I am in need of replacing the tires. It is currently wearing P215/70R14 all around but the spare is a P215/75R15. What is the correct tire size? Can I assume the 14 inch rims are correct?
