Take a look at the rear axle data and spec table in the '57
Chrysler/Imperial manual,Section II, it states AXLE END PLAY as .003" to
.008". But after looking through some other year Chrysler manuals, they all
state .013" to .018".

Gary,

My closest source for 1957 cars is Motors Manual, 1962. It shows in specs
.013-.023 and a foot note to set to .018. The word how to section stays with
this spec from 1957 to 1961 with special note about why the need for end
play (heat expansion of axle shafts).

I looked in a 1964 Motors and it wanders off into deep discussion as to
equalizing shim packs side to side to center thrust block which is a subject
the '62 book does not mention. Spec stays the same at set to .018 up through
1964. Switch from .003-.008 to .013 to .023 would seem to be for 1957 MY
Chryslers. I don't remember setting up Internationals that loose so checked
manual and spec is .001-.009. Surprised there has not been some posting as
to what happens with a Chrysler set at say .006 that should have been .018.

Tonight I attempted to visit the club web page, for the first time in a
while.  The mailing list home page lists the URL as

www.chrysler300club.com

Is the page down, or is there a new URL?  TIA.--David

I obviously do not have AC on a C300 - but my 1970 Cadillac was notorious
for leaking a pound or two of R-12 a year.  We all know how expensive that
can be.   A buddy of mine who runs a repair shop specializing in AC and
brakes insisted I was spending too much money with him every year (a friend
indeed) and insisted the two of us take a Saturday afternoon and a six pack
and replace every small rubber "0" ring in the system at the end of the
hoses.

THE TRICK OF THE OPERATION WAS TO SOAK ALL THE "O" RINGS IN MINERAL OIL
RIGHT UP UNTIL SECONDS BEFORE THE INSTALLATION.

3 years later - and with the weather in Central Virginia being as it has
been this summer - I'm a believer in this process.  I haven't put any R-12
in this car since that sweaty afternoon - and I haven't had a sweaty
afternoon in my car since...

Just one man's opinion.  And I don't own or drive anything built after
1970.

   Sean.

I was thumbing through a publication I got in a goodie bag at a car show last Sunday. The Bargain News Special Interest Vehicles. There was a 300L for sale. I e-mailed and got the ID#

C453219965. If it's not in the club files it can be added.

The 1958 Service manual specifies .013" - .018" end play.  And in bold
letters it states, "Note: It is recommended that the end play be held to the
high limit rather than the low.  The end play will decrease during operation
due to heat expansion."  It further states that one should have equal
thicknesses of shims on both sides of the axle.

This is lots of fun.  After measuring end play, you get to run around to
both sides of the car and even up the shim packs.  We set our end play on
the D at this range and have had no trouble.  Be very sure to use limited
slip length axles with limited slip rears and vice versa.  Axle lengths are
different.  Usually no one replaces the axles, but they will replace the
rear end.

Dave Schwandt here,

'58 manual says .013-.018".   '60, '61 are the same also. HOWEVER the '63
manual states that   (quote PPG 3-4)   " The axle shaft preferred end play
is .013 to .018 inch, however, up to .023 inch  is permissible. The end play
is necessary because as much as .012" end play may be taken up after the
operating temperatures are reached during normal operation. The loss of end
play occurs because the axle shafts expand (lengthwise) more than the axle
housing as the temps increase. LESS THAN .013 INCH END PLAY CAN RESULT IN A
PRELOADED BEARING,   UNDER THESE CONDITIONS, CAUSING SHORTER BEARING LIFE."
( my emphasis)   '64 states basically the same thing and goes into more
detail in explaining how to achieve this play  (.013-.023).

Just for the heck of it I looked in 2 other manuals....'56, which lists the
300-B on the cover as being included says ".003-.008 and '56 Dodge is the
same, .003-.008"

I really can't see any reason to run as much as .018" end play. The main
reason I can see for having end play, is to allow lubrication to the
bearings. How much play do you need for oil to get to the bearings? I would
of thought .007"-008" would be plenty. Just my .0002c worth.

Subject: 300L - VIN number and registry

Hi Harold,

Thanks for the lead and VIN number.  It's really important that every member
out there  communicate us the VIN's and ownership info of any Letter Series
300 they might stumble across, or read about, or find, or whatever...

Eleanor and Gloria both inform me that, as far as the 300L you read about,
"We have that VIN.  Owner was Mark Taraboletti, Titusville, FL as of '95
when he dropped membership." and also "Should anyone inquire, we have an
evaluation form on the L.  It's white. "

Having prior ownership info on a Letter Car will at some point be invaluable
to a future owner.  Wouldn't we all like to know where our cars have been
and who owned them before us ?  At the same time, it is up to us to build up
that database as best we can.

Thanks again

John
