I'm sending this message to restate the obvious .... my tires arrived
last week and were put on the F Saturday morning
and oh what a difference.  Going from bias ply to radial tires is
unbelievable.  Even from the passenger side the difference is obvious.
 It's like a whole different car, a real pleasure to drive.

Subject: 300 Club Fall Meet Registration

Hello all;
We have 20 some registered at the Hotel so far, but only 4 have sent in
their registrations to Gloria. this is a ongoing problem. She says that in
the past she gets registrations up to the day they leave for the meet. Not
good!

We need to know how many are going on the NASCAR event (I hope most, you'll
be sorry if you miss it), so I can make the final arrangements. It will be
hard if not impossable to get included the day of the race, so please don't
figure on deciding when you get to the meet, tell us now. We have to block
out the time and schedule the number of elimination races, so ALL get a
chance to race to the 300 Club Championship.

It's easy to sit down and write a check and get it off in the mail. It can
get very hectic trying to sort out all the details, get it loaded in a
spreadsheet, break down the money and get it all printed, when your and most
of the others registrations get there 2-3 days before Gloria has to leave
for the meet. Please help out our overworked volunteer Treasurer and get
those registrations in early! Swamp her next week!!! Just don't wait 'til
the end of August, please, please, please.

Now, if you've never been to a meet, nows the time. Even if only for a day
or two, treat yourself and come play with us. Take Friday off, and drive
bland X if not your 300, but meet some great people Friday night and play
Saturday, and drive home Sunday, if thats all the time you can spare, we
would love to meet you. You will come back for more. Jo Ann and I had never
done anything like this before and finally went to our first meet in 1980,
since then we've been to 35 or more.

Jeff and all:



Perhaps I am just daft but I don't understand what significance the axle end play has to do with putting disc brakes on the rear axle.



Aren't the rear calipers going to float in and out like the ones on the front?  Aren't you planning on using a self-adjusting and self-centering type of floating caliper system?



I have seen two types of floating calipers (as used on the front).  There are the ones that float in and out on pins and then there are the ones that float on little slides (like the ways on a lathe) that are machined into the caliper mounting brackets.  There must be other methods as well.



On most modern vehicles, one of the biggest challenges in adapting disc brakes to a conventional rear axle is how to incorporate some sort of an Emergency Brake.  We are very fortunate that our Chrysler 300's came with a supplemental Emergency Brake system mounted on the tailshaft of the transmission.  (Love it or Hate it!)  I believe that it was in 1965 that the Chrysler line changed to the flanged rear axle with a mechanical Emergency Brake provision in the rear drums.



I have heard that some of the disc brake conversion kits for off-road trucks have some method of actuating an Emergency Brake.  Some kits incorporate a mechanical actuator on the rear disc and some kits provide a separate disc brake and caliper that is mounted somewhere along the drive shaft, very similar (but much easier to service and adjust) to our drum brake on the trans.  It is significant that most of these kits are called "Parking Brakes".



Anyway, Please enlighten me about what this has to do with axle end play!  Someday, I would like to add 4 wheel discs and convert to the flanged axles on my ragtop.

button and it went away so here goes appended to another e/m i have i
can find to the same bunch.

         does the caliper slide b4 or after the puck begins to move and
at what speed will the inertia of the caliper overcome the pucks
resistance? or will your puck stay in position and your caliper always
vibrate back and forth to take up end play, will this wear out the
sliding mechanism? do you begin to see the problem??

There is one clinker in the soup:

In 1964, and 1964 only, all axle lengths are the same.
It makes no difference if you had a locking ("Sure Grip") or non-locking
differential.
In 1964 all axle lengths are the same, at 31.5".
These 31.5" long 1964 axles are the same axles as used on Sure Grip
differentials 1957 through 1963.

The axles for non-locking differentials 1957 through 1963 were 31.625" long.
There are no distinguishing marks or differences between the 31.5" and
31.625" axles and it takes careful measuring to tell the difference.

If you were to take the axles from a 1964 non-locking differential and throw
them in your 57 - 63 non-locking differential, you would regret it. You
would have .250" clearance for axle end play, and no amount of shim removal
will compensate for that.

Service Manual Errors:
It has been noted in previous posts that the 57 service manual has an error
in the axle clearance specification.
This is not the only error in the 57 service manual.
While restoring my 57 Saratoga, I found numerous errors in specifications
and wiring diagrams.
I determined these were indeed errors in the manual by checking the 58
service manual.....and also by the fact that reality didn't match what the
57 manual stated.

My point: get yourself service manuals from other years.
When something doesn't make sense, check the other manuals....it is entirely
possible that an error in one manual was corrected in the manual from the
following year.
This seems to be especially useful if the car you're working on is the first
in a new body style, such as 1957, 1960, 1963, 1965.

More likely as in the case of our 300D, a previous owner replaced the
"straight" rear with a limited slip rear for racing.  He left the straight
axles in.  After about 40,000 miles, the axles will wipe the splines right
off the end.  You have about 1 second warning and <POW>.  If you're very,
very lucky, Ray Jones will decide that very minute to come visit you (in his
L) and help you push the beast the two blocks home.  Checking the axle play
on a car that makes no noise and indicates nothing wrong on a used car is
not something one does.  And checking axle length is tough!!!!

I suppose the easiest thing to do is to check the microfilm for your 300 to
find out what kind of rear came in it.  Then jack your car up and see if the
rear in the car matches.

Subject: Show report from WPC Nationals at Wis Dells....

Since I'm terrible with names I will relate cars...
Seven letter series... in own class. THREE "H" Converts!!!

Hard luck trophy to 300 Pacecar (with flags) who happened to
disintergrate his ball and trunion front joint and was way-laid until
a new drive shaft was to be made Monday!!

Took neither of my "C" converts due to lack of time to fix all the
windows and wiring.  Good thing, though. Return trip home was marred
by a four-car sandwich on I-90 at Woodfield Rt 53 construction.
My '98 Dodge Van was #3. #4 was a Freightliner with 40,000 lbs of
potato chips. Shortened Van by about 18 inches.  Can't even THINK of
result if BOTH 300's were in line.....
