Looking for references on aluminum radiators. Hoping for lowest-cost, decent-quality.

I've an H (and an E-type) needing radiator re-coring. The $$$$ price seems to be similar to the price of brand-new aftermaket aluminum radiators. I've seen numerous ads for suppliers, but wondered if y'all had any particularly good experience/referral.

Many thanks! mv

ps.  The C-coupe made its first voyage around the block (under its own power) this past weekend...after 20-some years in a chicken coop. Nothing gushed-out or fell-off!

I am seeking a recommended supplier of exhaust system components.  In particular I would like someone to make up for me the high performance exhaust system for a 56 300 B which was offered the 355 HP optional motor.  I do have the exhaust manifolds.  John Lazenby if you are listening, I know that you had such a system built for your B.  Are you happy with the results and if so provide info?

Also a friend of mine has need for 3 or 4 complete systems for 57 300 C autos that he is restoring(coupe and convert).  Southern Calif would be good, but anywhere is OK.

Has anyone had experience with Kepich Exhaust out of Florida.  I believe that they once advertised in Hemmings and specialized in stainless systems.

Still looking for provider of 3.07 ring and pinion or complete differential for 300 B.

Thanks

A local shop (Kirkland, WA) put a 2-1/2" dual exhaust system on my 66-300.
It runs the same diameter from the headers to the exhaust tips, and includes
a cross-over pipe (H-pipe).

I have seen a '69 300 with 2 3/4" Dual exhaust.....though I didn't look
underneath to see how tight it was.

Generally you will find a good exhaust shop can squeeze pipe between the
tank and leaf springs without too much difficulty but often an additional
hanger is needed to restrict the pipe from swaying side and to side and
rattling as the engine torques. There should be no problem hanging larger
pipe from the manifolds/headers back to the mufflers though you don't really
need anything larger than the 2 1/4" with Duals unless you are running a
really wild 440 and need to evacuate those exhaust gases easier. (Of course
3" pipes do look much better than 2 1/4 coming out the back of a car the
size of yours)

This brings up a question.......do you really need a cross-over pipe on a
big block Mopar with a heat crossover in the intake? I've heard the exhaust
pressure is already equalized sufficiently without the H-pipe. Anybody know
for sure?

Hi Roger,

Yes I'm out here listening !!  I purchased NOS 4 bolt Dodge Truck manifolds and had to have the pipe flanges made.  We did a run of several pairs on the flanges and I sold them through the club.  My source is now gone for those.  The gaskets come in the complete engine set through Felpro.  If you need the number separate I can provide.

I found a local shop that did quality work and the prices reflected such.  The system was custom built to the car and was worth every penny.  It really made a difference in the way the car performs not to mention the attention it draws from the exhaust note.

I've heard stories about someone who does exhaust systems in Florida and it has all been bad.  Don't know if it is these folks, but my thought is you will get a better product if you find the right place and stand there and watch them build it.

Just rebuilt the engine in my 300C and purchased a set of Sanderson short headers for it.  The car is much healthier now and warrants an exhaust upgrade, so when time and money allows I may do that one as well.

I do have another set of the Dodge Truck manifolds and flanges that I'm saving for that rainy day.  Then last but not least I purchased a set of the factory cast headers used on J's and K ram cars with the short ram intakes.  For years they have been setting on my shelf and if I ever get the urge they may end up on my F.

Good luck with the hunt,

John Lazenby

Hi..  answering both Mike and Roger...

Mike, I have had a few radios converted from stock AM  to high-power AM-FM
by
Antique Automobile Radio, 700 Tampa Rd., Palm Harbor, FL., 34683. (800)
933-4926, Fax (727) 789-0283. ; very satisfied with their service.  I would
just add that, in the case of the 1964, an AM-FM radio was available, and if
one could be found cheap, working or not, it would make a better candidate
for switchover than the stock AM, as it would have the FM dial...

Roger, on exhaust systems:  Kepich has a terrible reputation - pipes that
don't fit, and no effort on behalf of the company to make things right when
that happens. I have heard many sad tales to that effect.  Unless someone
else on this list knows somehting I don't about another source for these
pipes, best way to go is to find a good muffler shop, and have the pipes
fabricated on the car.  My local Meineke has a very good manager, who does
the custom work himself, knows how to use a pipe bender, and takes pride in
his work.  The average cost of a custom exhaust system, identical to stock,
from downpipes back on a ram car, or from exhaust manifold back on a regular
car, has been $300 - $350 bucks out the door.  THis is the way to go, I
think..

John

Hi, Gang. I happen to have several extra copies of the "Old Cars Weekly" 2003 Calendar available for sale. This is the calendar that has been talked about here, that features the nifty, red 300C Convertible as the October vehicle. These are very nice sized calendars with 11 other super cars featured (I can e-mail you a list of these other vehicles, if you want). These calendars make excellent gifts for Christmas. I bought a bunch for that very purpose, and wound up with four extras. I am happy to sell them to club members for $8.00 each, INCLUDING shipping in the USA. By the way, Old Cars charges $9.95, plus shipping for this calendar, if you were to buy one outright from them. So, e-mail me direct at drjjkoot@xxxxxxx   if you'd like to buy one or more of these calendars from me. Thanks, John in Wisconsin

Ditto on John's comments re: Kepich.  I still have a set of Kepich pipes for
one of our Hudsons that I'm keeping just for scrap needs.  That's about all
they were good for.

I agree the best way is to find a good bender and have him do it.  Check
around the old car comunity in your area.

Exhaust system answers match my understanding exactly, but the 1965 L am/fm
radio must be similar to the 64 and my radio man said they are a good AM
radio with a tiny inadequate FM section sandwiched into the back as an
after-thought. Far better to have the whole insides replaced with modern
stuff or find one of the FM separate units sold by Radio Shack years ago that
operate through one of the higher end frequencies of the AM band.  I used
these years ago and the FM was good and strong but you had to have the tuner
showing or hidden in the glove or under the seat.

Ryan,

The crossover pipe helps the engine breathe a little better, each cylinder
has a chance to flow into both mufflers instead of one, that cuts down on
the restriction and allows you to use quieter style mufflers and still have
power and efficiency. The crossover also makes things a bit quieter and
keeps the tailpipe on the "cold" side from rotting out earlier.

Subject: FM radios in 1964 and 65

Was there an FM available in 300's in 64???  I believe FM was only
available in Imperial.  We got the FIRST FM in our '65 Dodge Coronet
and it cost damn near 1/4 the car. I have the window sticker buried
in my files---it was something like $700 for radio package and $2,500
for car!!  FM then meant tuning capacitors, static collectors and
eliminators and all kinds of goodies on car, even a different antenna.

If it was an option in '64 300, the radios are certainly rarer than
the cars. If your find one, it would be a sin to gut it
and "modernize".  Better you just carry a "boom" box. The early FM
units are kinda like factory 4 speeds, but rarer.

Thanks John and all who commented on Kepich.  What an amazing outpouring on this company(sounds like Enron and World Com rolled into one).

The fellow who is seeking someone in Southern Cal that I noted needs 3 or 4 exhaust systems for 57 C's is Timo Tanskanen(most of you all know him).  He lost his exhaust guy(closed the shop) and looking for a first class alternative.

John L. could you give me the address or phone number of the fellow that did yours.  Did he save a pattern of your system(for my B) for his pipe bender machine?  I will pass contact info to Timo.  I have been ragging on Timo for a couple of years to get a computer and go online.  So far he thinks it will slow him down but I think that he is weakening.  Next time he is up here I will give him a tour of the Listserv to see what he is missing.

Thanks again to all of you
