Mark,
I coiled a very hard and weathered windshield rubber for my 60 Imperial into a 5 gal. pail and poured in 2 or 3 gallons of WD 40. I then forgot about it for a couple of weeks. What I removed from the bucket was a grotesquely swollen window rubber, but boy was it soft and flexible. I figured I'd ruined it, but I had lots of time before the window was going back in , so I hung it outside most of the summer. Buy fall I took it to my body man for an opinion. He installed it without any problems. It's still in place after 3 years.

My advise would be to WATCH IT CAREFULLY once it's soaking. Remove it every day or two and wipe it down to inspect it.
There must be other things than WD 40 to soak rubber in , but this is what had been recommended to me.
Good luck,
Bruce Naimy

  Hi, gang,
My 300 H resto is progressing nicely. I'm at the point of installing
the front and back glass.  My original rubber gaskets are dirty and a
little stiff but not cracked or deteriorated.  I've heard many
stories in the past about soaking them in something, but I forgot
what that something is.  Does anyone have any suggestions on what to
use to soften and clean these rubbers ???

  Thanks,

Good mornin'. Looking for a part of the push-button shifter dash mount.

Its the front-facing piece with the button holes that the shiny faceplate
attaches to. The piece then attaches to the longer housing that then
connects to the dash. I just need that front piece. It may still have the
felt backer, and the left side is a triangular affair that mates-up with the
door pillar area.

The one I have is from a later car, though I do have the correct longer
part that connects to the dash.

Please let me know if you have one around. As the cars get farther along,
I'm finding a few wrong/missing pieces.   Many thanks!  mike v

Hi again. Sorry for the junkmail. Please add one more item to my wish list:
a 3-grooved pulley
for the 392. This pulley has 2 identical belt grooves towards the rear, and
a third but larger groove in front. It is mounted to the waterpump shaft.
This would be for a non-air conditioned car with power steering.

My interchange manual doesn't list pulleys, but if you have one from
another/unknown vehicle, I'll find pictures/measurements.

Thanks thanks thanks!

Since my C was just rear-ended yesterday, I too am curious about these
quarter panels.  yes, I am going to need one in the near future.  As soon as
I and the insurance co. come to some kind of agreement.  I was wondering
what I was going to do this winter.  Now I know.  Start over on the rear end
of the Chrysler.

Hi all:

If Mike means Armor-all instead of Amor-all, then I would not recomment its
use.  Years ago, I used Armor-all on the vinyl top of my '76 NYer to preserve
it and bring out the color and within months it rotted out.  Several friends
have had the same results on vinyl.  Maybe rubber would be different but on a
part that may be difficult and expensive to obtain, I definitely would not
chance it.

At some point in my information collection period, I ran across a
probable
explanation into the workings of Armor-All. I heard/read that it works
partially by raising the plactizers from inside the treated material
towards
the surface. In time this lead to the treated material actually drying
out.

I hate to put a bad rap on any product but I have also heard horror stories about Armor-All.

When I called the place that manufactures new dash pads called "Just Dashes", they said to never use Armor-All on your dash or any vinyl.

I asked what they recommended to use on their new dash pads and they told me to use Pledge furniture polish / wax.

Okay,  I just heard from a guy locally, who does restorations, he recommends
cleaning the rubber thoroughly and then brushing on "Go-Jo" hand cleaner,
let is soak in a wash tub for 1 or 2 days, then wash off and let air dry.
When he told me to use Go-Jo, it came back to me.  A few years ago, I used
it to soften a hood-to-core support seal for my 70 300.  It worked great.

Thanks for the input,
Mark

The original Armor-all has been rumored to destroy leather, vinyl, and
rubber over time. I understand if it isn't used regularely it will dry out
the upholstery etc. and it will eventually crack prematurely. There are
newer Armor-all products on the market now.......maybe they've corrected the
problem?

I personally use saddle soap and leather cream conditioner on my cars for
a nice satin lustre. I find a good leather conditioner will really do a nice
job of softening old dry leather and vinyl.

The only time I ever use Armor-all or any product like it is when I want my
tires to shine on my daily driver.......even then there are better products
than Armor-all that actually last and don't turn the tires brown after a few
days.

Just my two cents. Ryan

This discussion about softening window rubber triggers a question that I
have been toiling with. What can be used to safely clean rubber window
gaskets? My front and rear gaskets on my '65 are soft enough but are pretty
gooped up with sealer (As well as the edges of my original rear glass)

The front glass had been replaced recently and I think it's eurethane that
was used however the original black sealer is still present as well and is
really sticky. Didn't really want to resort to acetone, laquer thinner, or
any type of stripper until I ran it by the group.

What was the original product used and what will disolve it(if anything)?
Anybody have any tricks to make this job easier?

Ryan Hill
