they'll take it and run with it and let the chips fall where they may. My
feelings weren't hurt in the least - it's just that you did exactly what

You must have overlooked the following at the Audi website and/or not be
aware that Audi is a subsidiary of VW....
AUBURN HILLS, Mich.-The employees and management of the Volkswagen Group

Foundation to assist victims of terrorist attacks in the United States. The
Foundation will be funded initially with $2 million dollars (US) from

Audi 5000s has 180,000 miles on it, still looks new and runs faultlessly at

I received this from Phil Kuyava. Thought it was interesting enough to pass
along ~ even though it doesn't address 300s! I'm not sure who he got if
from but ...
After seeing a short news listing on "CNN Headline News" regarding Ford and
GM's contributions to the relief and recovery efforts in New York City and
Washington D.C., I was prompted to see what the other automotive companies
were contributing. I have never worked for an automotive company - nor has
anyone in my family. It is, however, the prominent industry here in
Michigan. I also feel it is important to know which companies are there for
us in a crisis.
I went to (the news, press release and philanthropic areas of) each of the
companies' web sites. If the company had several sites, I tried to visit
them all. Additionally, I visited the leading news and automotive sites.
As of today, one week since the attacks, this is what I have found:
Aston Martin - Nothing.
Audi - Nothing. Audi's web site states "Audi News: Always up to the
minute."
BMW - Nothing despite other press releases/postings since 09/11/01 BMW's
web site states "The news service from the BMW Group: Fast, informative and
comprehensive." Last updated 09/13/01.
Daewoo International - Nothing.
Daimler Chrysler (includes Dodge, Jeep, Mercedes-Benz and Plymouth) $10
million to support the children and victims in addition to other donations
from their employees, dealers and suppliers.
Fiat - Nothing.
Ford Motor Company (includes Jaguar, Lincoln, Mazda, Mercury and Volvo) $1
million to the American Red Cross, matching employee contributions to the
American Red Cross and 10 Excursions to the New York Fire Department. The
company has also offered emergency response team services and office space
to displaced government employees.
General Motors (includes Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, Oldsmobile,
Pontiac,Saab and Saturn) - $1 million to the American Red Cross, matching
employee contributions and a fleet of vans, trucks and SUVs.
Honda (includes Acura) - Nothing. Honda's site states, "If you're looking
for the latest developments taking place at Honda, you've come to the right
place" and "Informative.
Timely. Credible. The latest news on Honda can always be found right
here?" No press releases/postings since 09/04/01 when the release boasted
"American Honda Motor Co., Inc. recorded its second best sales month ever in
August." My search included:
hondamotorcycle.com (other press releases posted on this site since
09/11/01), honda.com, honda2001.com, world.honda.com, acura.com and
honda.co.jp.
Hyundai Motors Group (includes Kia) - $300,000 to the American Red Cross.
Isuzu - Nothing.
Mitsubishi Motors - Nothing. Mitsubishi-motors.co.jp site states, "The
latest news about Mitsubishi Motors." I also searched mitsubishimotors.com.
Nissan - Nothing despite other press releases/postings since 09/11/01.
Porsche - Press release with condolences posted on the Porsche web site on
09/12/01, but no contribution.
Subaru - Nothing despite other press releases/postings since 09/11/01.
Suzuki - Nothing.
Toyota (includes Lexus) - Press release with condolences posted on the
Toyota web site on 09/14/01, but no contribution, despite earlier press
releases boasting that Toyota had high sales in July and August.
Volkswagen - The employees and management created a Foundation, funded
initially with $2 million, to assist the children and victims with
humanitarian help including medical and psychological assistance,
rehabilitation and scholarships.
I can only hope that it is an oversight by the companies that have not made
a contribution and that they will join the relief efforts. We have the
freedom to choose which companies we make purchases from and I, for one,
will make my purchases from and give my money to the companies that are
giving their money to America at this time of need. I hope that you will,
too.
Please forward this e-mail - especially to anyone you know who is thinking
of purchasing a vehicle. Remember this the next time you make that move to
buy your next car...New or used.....

Ladies and Gents,
My short take on this topic goes like this ...
If you intend to drive an old car (any old car) regularly, but especially at
high speeds and surrounded by exceedingly capable modern cars, it would be a
good idea to subtly upgrade the handling, safety, and stopping equipment on
your car. Ideally, this can be achieved without destroying historically
interesting, and perhaps very rare, original parts. One can upgrade AND
preserve, and that is a worthy goal.
If you intend to drive modestly, taking into account that what was
considered excellent stopping / handling 40 or so years ago is not competent
against modern traffic, then by all means keep your car original and
preserve it as a rolling testiment to just how good the Chrysler engineers
were way back then. I have done so (so far) and I just leave a really big
cushion to make up for the difference in stopping power.
Do a reality check by comparing a contemporary road test of your Brute
against, say, that new BMW 3 series that is cutting you off. Technology has
come a long way, no doubt about it.
I have to say that this choice is harder for a '300' owner because the car,
in the context of its time, was REALLY REALLY GOOD. We Jensen owners have a
much easier choice, as leaving an Interceptor or Healey in factory stock
condition will virtually guarantee that it will 1) overheat and 2) catch
fire. So we upgrade and don't look back!

Fellows, If you cannot stop and kill yourself(selves), you will not be able
to enjoy your 300. I purchased a 57 C from Kent Hurt in 1989 and he had put
disk brakes on from an 1971( I believe) Imperial. I can lock up the front
tires at over 140 miles an hour. This car will not only stop, but it will
not
fade. I have other 300's and they cannot stop more than once from a hard
run.
Then the brake fade will kill you. George Riehl indicated to me that he ran
regular brake linings in combo with heavy duty metallic linings, split one
regular, one metallic per drum. He said he could make a stop with his J at
over 140, hard to the wall and not experience any brake fade. I am going to
try this on my Ram K. If it does not work, the disk package goes on! I love
to drive fast and stopping is a prerequisite. The life you save may be your

Subject: 300 Meet in Palm Springs
Drove home from Palm Springs yesterday after a great gathering of 300 Clubbers in Palm Springs. Great food, great company, and GREAT CARS. We visited a very exclusive collection at the Ponde Estate--cars from 30's classics to Aston Martins to 50's convertibles to Ferraris--quite overwhelming and a thrill to get to see the cars. Also a trip to the Air Museum put together by this same Mr. Ponde, I believe. Beautiful display of WWII planes and photos and descriptions plus volunteers giving descriptive, informational talks. Then off to our show at our own private parking lot, great sandwiches/drinks and more good visiting. Richard and I were made to feel very welcome-- a really nice group of folks. We really had a good time. So many thanks to Moana and Jerry and Ken and Cele and everybody else.
This all was at the end of a long road trip via Kalispell, MT, to pick up and interior. Lucky us!! WE got to visit Gary at his home and then again in Palm Springs. Picked up out two 300G's at George Riehl's in Jonesville, MI. Had a great visit with George and with Elinor. Loaded the "show" car on the trailer and the "driver" on its own stead behind. Made it as far as Gallup, NM, in this mode, but there were definte signs of strain, like a bit too much tranny smoke coming out the back. Loaded up the "driver", and started up the "show" car. Drive beautifully all the way to Palm Springs and then all the way home to Berkeley, 500 plus miles yesterday. Now to find space for them!!
Anyway, that's the sort of short version. Had a thrill of a lifetime drive through Yellowstone along the way as well.
Good to be home.

Did a little reading over the weekend.Was surprised to learn that Chrysler
tried E.F.I in the 1957 D. There were 35 Chryslers 12 dodges, 5 deSotos and two
Plymouths assembled with EFI. This was the Bendex unit straight bolt on for
about $400.They were recalled as anyone who fooled with the early corvette
can understand .Jim.

Hi to all,
I received a call from Chris Ellis from Mopar Collector Guide , responding
to a fax I sent that magazine, complaining loudly about the fact that ads
from West Coast Antique still appear in their November 2001 issue and that
ads for Suncoast Plastics were in the previous issue.
Chris informed me that, even though MCG is aware there is some kind of a
problem with Gary Whitehead and the various businesses he operates, my faxed
complaint was the FIRST and ONLY one to reach them to date. MCG is quite
willing to do the right thing and refuse to print ads from Suncoast Plastics
or West Coast Antique, providing that they receive OTHER complaints besides
mine, in writing.
Therefore I would urge anyone who's been victimized by Gary Whitehead in any
way (stolen lenses, inferior products received) to please put this down in
writing and fax it to MCG at (225) 274-9033, together with a request for MCG
to please stop accepting Whitehead's ads !

Hi to all,
As Henry mentionned in his e-mail to the group, those of us who attended the
Chrysler 300 Club Inc. meet in Palm Springs had a wonderful time, thanks to
all the work and efforts of Gerry and Moana Steinberg. I saw many old
friends and made some new ones. It's always refreshing to see some different
cars, that usually don't make it to our Club's events due to geographical
considerations. The love we share for our 300's is certainly as strong on
the other side of the Rockies !
Yes, the Pond collection alone would have been worth the trip... what an
amazing man Mr. Pond is - for more information , click on

about Mr. Pond, his life, and his automobile and aircraft collection. An
unforgettable experience. Mr. Pond himself was there to greet us and welcome
us personally to his estate. What a trip !
Now for the "good" part :
Our group shared the Pond Estate tour with another SoCal group. They and
their cars were at the estate when we arrived. As I walked by an Imperial
convertible, my eyes happened catch the license plate frame - "Gary
Whitehead's Imperial" , it said ! Guess God works in mysterious ways... it
wasn't hard to identify and find the owner of the Imperial, and, with the
support of two of my friends, you might all be happy to know that Gary
Whitehead just found himself in a VERY uncomfortable position, as he was
confronted, publicly and extremely loudly, by yours truly. All heads (and
there were MANY) turned to see what the commotion was all about. All of a
sudden, Whitehead, who of course had no idea who I was or what I looked like
in person, found himself face to face with me in a very public setting and
surrounded by many of his peers ! I don't think he could have invented a
worse scenario in his worst nightmare.... heck, I'm in N.Y. and he's in CA -
what are the odds we'd ever come face to face anywhere, he must have figured
!
Yes, he did run and leave - rather quickly. With his tail between his legs.
When confronted, the little slimeball tried to appease me with empty
promises that he'd "look into it" and "return my lenses" and this and that -
a lot of double-talk. I don't think that I'll ever get anything back from
him, but, by God, I don't think he's about to forget what just happened to
him this past Saturday, anytime soon ! One minute he's walking around having
a grand old time ( and touching car after car - we watched him for quite a
bit before confronting him - he didn't even have the respect to keep his
hands in his pockets like every one else there) and the next... HELLO,
GARY !
I also want to take this opportunity to thank all members of this group who
have offered their help and support with regards to the above-named , and
e-mailed me back privately or thru the server. Please follow through and fax
MCG at (225) 274-9033 and let them know that no respectable Mopar magazine
should accept ads from this slimy individual.
