Subject: Hubcaps

Hi All,
I accidently deleted the gentleman's email re hubcaps that look like the 1961 G hubcap but are stamped with DISK BRAKE around the rim. If memory serves, these are for the circa 1967 Dodge with the optional disk brakes and 15" wheels. I believe the centers that unbolt will interchange and the cap fits the 1961 but, obviously, the reference to disk brakes is wrong.

Anyone else have a better recollection?

Brian Frank

Hello fellow listers, I received my "square" steering wheel from Joe in
Montana recently, and it has a few cracks in it. I would like to try to get it
restored. Is there a process by which I might try to do this myself? Thanks in
advance, Greg

Hello fellow 300 aficionados. I wanted to report my 300 sightings at Mopars
in the Park up in Shakopee Minnesota this past Sat. I was an early arriver and
parked close to the gate right next to Mr. Dennis Gage of my Classic Car fame.
He was filming there that day, and it will be interesting to see which cars
he picked for features. There were many 300's represented. I saw an E, a G, a
D, a couple 64's one with a 4 speed (non-letter) and one convertible. and I met
a nice young couple with a 63 300 who wants to buy my trunk mat that I
recently purchased on Ebay. I spoke briefly with Mr. Gary Miller, owner of the 1959
E, and we discussed a possible trade of my 6.9L Mercedes and his car. He is a
very interesting person with a penchant for car collecting and also Ham radio
stuff. I am not sure whether he and I will get together on the trade, but I
will keep everyone posted. As an aside, the owner of the E, twice removed, came
by during my chat with Mr. Miller. The weather was perfect and I will
definitely go back next year. I did take pictures of the 300's there in case anyone is
interested. Greg (64 300K still......in....the shop)

I just purchased a 1961 G.

Any recommendations on a car cover for this vehicle (It will be stored in a garage). Also, I am going to purchase the shop manual. Any recommendations on CD vs text?

Thanks in advance

Took delivery of my summer cruiser, late of Mena Arkansas, and the taillight
potmetal is shabby.  Anybody have either side in presentable condition for a
66 300?

Hello Fellow 300 Folks,

I am very much in need of either NOS or decent ( capable of turning
and staying legal) used drums for a 1962 Chrysler Sports 300
Convert.  My understanding is that all Stateside built 1962 Chryslers
except the Newport had the same 12 inch units.

Can some good soul put me on to a set for sale.

Thanks a million - hope they don't cost a million!

Tom

Welcome to the ranks of G owners Mark!
I bought a cover for mine from Beverly Hills Motoring Accessories years
ago for out door use. They also sell lighter duty covers for indoor use.
Since they already have the pattern from mine they can probably help you
out.
In regards to the shop manuals on CD Rom, I would stick with the text
version. I recently got one for another car of mine and despite what they
advertise, the book is easier to use. Good luck with your G.
300ly,
    Don

>Hi Aussie, I've lived with Big Block (427 & 454 ci. in.) Corvettes all my
adult life & have learned some of the problems that make them handle funny.
I have driven them up to 140 MPH, mostly on race tracks, & never had
problems with the rear end not tracking properly. Corvettes built between
'63 & '82 had the same basic frame/suspension system and are prone to two
common problems. First, age deteriorates the rear trailing arm bushings.
Second, in the colder climates where gobs of salt are used on the roads,
rust will weaken the frame at the attaching point of the trailing arms. Both
of there conditions will cause the rear end to wander or "steer" from the
rear. A properly maintained & aligned rear suspension in a Corvette will
produce cornering results that exceed the capability of our trusty 300's.
300'ly yours,

Hi Folks - I agree with Jim, and I am agreeing from a position of strength.
I have in my garage, quite close to each other a 300C Coupe that we have
owned for many years, and have put many miles on it, some at speed, and a
1964 Corvette Big Tank Fuelie Coupe which we have also driven at 120MPH.
There is no question in my mind that the Corvette is a much more comfortable
car at speed.  This one has a 3:08 rear end so it has nothing till 3500rpm
but then.........  Jim is much braver than I, as the mid-year vettes get
very light on the front end starting at 125, and are almost undriveable over
140

You may be legal with the drums if they are under .090".   I tried
getting my 62-300 drums turned at my local auto parts chain stores and
they kept measuring over .060 and thus would not turn them (the 62 drums
do not have the tuning allowance cast into them as do the the later
Mopar drums.  I went back to my '62. shop manual  book for some evidence
that allowed turning drums up to .090 with no avail.  I finally found a
75+ year old gentleman who had an independent  small 50 year old
automotive machine shop, behind a non-chain auto parts store in another
town who turned the drums - no sweat!.  Two things to make my .066 Over
size drums turnable.  1. Both his drum gages read the drums "under"
,060!!    2.  He indicated that as he remembers doing these early drums
up to .090 over size.  as chrysler brake drums, to the early/mid 60's
were allowed turning up to .090 oversize.  He looked amongst his many
many well worn and dusty shop books for the brake manual covering 1962
with no avail.  Did find something , about '64-65 that indicated .090
allowance.

In summary these kids behind the parts counter are programed to reject
any thing over .060,  use drum gages that are maybe purposely out of
accuracy so they can sell new drums,   use cheap-out-of-calibration (or
never calibrated) gages.  Find an old timer, or machined shop, like I
did,  that has been turning drums for 40-50 years and get them done there!

It would be of help to us all if someone out there has some hard copy of
the drum turning allowance for various years of Mopar that we can take
to the local parts store and shove it in their face when getting our
over .060 drums turned.  I wish I had found this old machine shop a few
years back as I would have saved 6-8  '62-300 drums I tossed because
they were measured over .060 by the local autoparts jokey (I also
doubled check the measurement using his gauge and went to another auto
parts shop) when I brought all  my '62 drums to be measured (some 20+
drums).
