Amazing how the Kelsey Hayes story has spread.  Have never seen one on a
Mopar.  Always Motorwheel but you can really start an argument with some
people of this--they have always heard Kelsey Hayes and its the gospel

though Motor wheel is always printed on them!!

Yes Steve, you are correct.  My statement was not to imply that
Chrysler/Imperial wheels were the same.  For those who want to know the
Chrysler/DeSoto wheel is 48 spoke with a 4 1/2" pattern.  A side note on
this is that you will sometimes see these on a Ford street rods as the
pattern is the same.  You can not take a Ford wheel with the same pattern
and bolt it to a Chrysler as the center hole is to small.

The Imperial wheel is 52 spokes on a 5 1/2" pattern and is wider and has
yet a larger center hole.  From what I've seen of the repro wheels they
are in a 52 spoke format which would be wrong for a Chrysler if you want
to go for correctness.

Caps for either of these are available in repro form from Coker currently.
I just purchased one for a spare for the '55 Imperial Newport I'm
finishing up.  A few years ago Bob Bornstein in Burbank, California was
producing a beautiful product, but now that Coker has them coming from
China I don't know if he is still in the game.  The hardware used on Bob's
cap was superior to the Coker, but the look is about the same.  Long term
Bob's plating has held up well, time will tell with the Coker product.

My recommendation is if you have original caps don't waist the time and
money to have them replated as most platers will loose the crisp edges due
to buffing.  This is the one of those rare exceptions when I will use a
repro item over an original.

Last, because the question is asked a lot.  Chrysler offered wires from
1951 through 1955 as a factory option.  In 1956 they became a dealer item.

The power steering pump on my 300 D ("slipper type") is oozing a small
amount 
of PS fluid.  The leak seems to be from the O-ring sealing the actual pump
to 
the fluid reservoir.  Does anybody have any specs on this O-ring?

Subject: 300F fuel gauge

Hi all:

Just a bit of a problem here.

A couple of years ago, I replaced the float in the tank of my 300F.  
Reason was that the gauge would not register what was actually in 
the tank and I found that the problem was a bad float.

The other day, I went to start the car and the gauge showed empty.  
Backed the car out of the garage and jostled it around a bit and still 
no movement of the gauge.  Put in a gallon of gas and drove down 
and got 10 gallons more.  The needle immediately showed a little 
over 1/2 tank.  Whew!  Sigh of relief.

However, the needle now shows either empty or somewhere between 
that and 1/4 tank.  Mostly empty though.  If  I come to a screeching 
stop, the needle goes up a bit and then returns to the empty position.  

Anyone have any ideas of where I am at?  The ground strap at the 
tank is in place.  I thought the float may be full of gas again but then 
why did it register over 1/2 tank when I added 10 gallons and stay 
there at least until I got the car home and shut it off?

Any idea contributions will be appreciated.  Thanks.

1.On some u-joints, it's necessary to attach an adapter on the end of the 
grease gun that has a smaller fitting or a needle point to get into tight 
places.

2.When turning the output shaft by hand it will have more resistance in
one 
direction because of the one-way "sprag" clutch in the rear of the trans 
holding some of the parts from turning, it is designed to work that way
and 
is not a problem.

3.If the differential has a limited-slip carrier, it should have an 
identifying tag under one of the mounting bolts, casting numbers on the 
housing are generally just used to identify the housing itself.

 The next time you replace your u-joints get Dana brand.  They make the
ones with the fitting in the end of the cap.
