The MP cam I've used the most is the "resto" cam 268/284, either one or three bolt. All that I recall have had a spray of purple paint on them. The other "common" MP cam is the 292 - 509, I've heard some refer to as a "purple" cam too. Ditto the "Hemi" grind 284 - 484 cam. I guess I've always heard of the "purple cam" referred to as any Mopar Performance cam differentiating it from a Comp Cams, Crane, Isky, etc. What's going on that I need to change planets?? 300ly Russ Vaughan [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] ________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ Message: 2 Date: Sat, 06 Dec 2003 11:48:05 -0800 From: Mike Apfelbeck <moparmike@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx> Subject: Re: rebuilding '64 413 motor Russ, According to Chrysler's engine modification handbook, the"purple shaft" Street Hemi Grind camshaft has a 284° duration and is listed under part # P3690214. The 1968-1976, 383 and 400-4 Bbl. H.P. and 1967-1976, 440 H.P. engines have used camshaft # PN3512907, which has 276° duration. The three bolt camshaft is the 440-6 Bbl. part, # PN 3512033 (1970) or # PN3512903 (1971) it has the same timing #s as the high perf 4 Bbl camshafts(276°) but has a low-taper design and must be used with matching lifters. The 440-6 Bbl engine was the only B or RB engine to leave the factory with a three-bolt cam. The car has the original wheels on it and they need to be rebuilt since they cut my tubes from time to time. I don't have the time to have that done so I'm going to replace them with newer wire wheels. Can anyone tell me the proper width of the wire wheels? They're 15" in diameter but I'm not sure about the width and a friend of mine owns a wheel shop a few minutes from my current residence and is going to give me a deal on the price but I need to know the proper width. By the way, I would like to sell the original wheels to anyone interested. Just make me an offer. A hefty layer of duck-tape inside the rim solved my problem for at least 2000 miles. As for wheel width, the size you probably are rolling on is 5.5" There will also be 5.0" originally for '55 on Dodges if I recall right, and 6.5" for Imperials with a different bolt pattern. Anyone knowing better should correct me, the Parts Manuals are quite unclear. If you will go on selling the original wire wheels, I will gladly give you an offer. As a result, I decided to study the formula in the club article "All About Rams." The formula can be simplified. I came up with the following. These formulas are for 30" ram tubes. The cam for the 300F and 300G has a valve duration of 268 degrees and results in a maximum torque at 2800 rpm. Soooo, To determine the RPM at which maximum torque will be attained when valve duration is known: R = (720-D)6.195 or; To determine required intake valve duration in degrees to attain maximum torque at a preselected RPM: D = 720-R/6.195 Where: R = RPM D = Intake valve duration in degrees NOTE: In order to attain maximum torque, the ram cam gear MUST have the cam locating pin retarded 2 degrees. I do not take any credit for the formulas in the ram article, I just made them easier to understand. The constant of 6.195 takes into consideration all the calculations concerning ram length, wave length, etc. Just some idle thoughts.
