Some of us have rather strong negative feelings also regarding ethanol.  I
am originally from Nebraska, and back there(I visited 3 weeks ago)  ethanol
is known as the welfare program(among others) for corn farmers.  It is
unknown to me how a product such as ethanol can be produced economically
when it must be created from corn, which must be planted(with all its
attendant overhead), using tractors, harvested using pickers, refined into
this product, shipped to California using trucks(how much fuel does this all
use?), incorporated in our gasoline at great expense and numerous different
recipes(for different climates, elevations, times of years etc).

The way this all works is that we pay higher prices for our
gasoline(remember this topic from a few months ago on this forum) and the
balance of the economic inefficiency is made up by the Federal government in
direct subsidy payments to all those with their hands out or in the till.

And to what end.  Oil companies(yes I know all the arguments!) have said for
years that they can produce clean fuel without additives such as MTBE and
ethanol but the politicos do not wish this as it does not have the vote
buying power of these additives.  Remember when MTBE was the end all be all,
and now see where it has gone, I suspect the same will happen to ethanol
after another few 10's of billions of dollars will be wasted.

And worst of all, we must now worry about the fuel systems on our beloved
autos just to please some environmental wackos,  politicos in DC and farmers
in Nebraska.  Don't you just love Democracy in action.  Is it any wonder the
Iraqi's are upset?

Modern rubber fuel lines and related rubber parts are made from compounds
not affected by ethanol. Read the date code stamped on the line to make sure
it is of recent manufacture. I replaced all the old lines on my G with new
lines a couple of years ago with modern line and have not had a problem.
Avoid old stock fuel pump rebuild kits and seek out modern replacements.  I
would much rather see ethanol in the gas than that MTBE crap.  The way
things are going with gas prices, it is hard to rule out a renewable
resource like ethanol made from corn grown right here, not in the middle
east.
