[Chrysler300] RE: with unusual floor shift

The manual shift big cars in '61 do indeed have the chrome pushbutton plate
- with the knock-outs still attached. The '62 cars I've seen with manual
shift have what appears to be a black, plastic block-off plate behind the
open buttonholes. The shifter perch is a large box welded onto the side of
the trans tunnel - overtop a kinda sloppy-cut hole. The trans itself is a
tough "HD" 3-speed; common from (at least) '61-63 & identifiable by a large,
raised bump on the top access panel (a tough reach from underneath). The
boot is a coke can-sized deal - shared (I think) with the cheapest of Darts,
etc. The shifter knob is the ugly tractor-looking thing seen in those pics.
Like the console mount blocks, there's even a wooden adapter mount under the
shifter boot. The parking brake is an amazingly primitive friction strap!
The lettercar consoles had abundant open space on the driverside 'glas skirt
for the perch/shifter to clear. Weird, but oh-so cool.

ps. our pal Frank Mitchell has cheap ($9 for clutch, anyway) NOS pedals for
this car's clutch & brake! Mine arrived in less than 1-week. His website
seems to be the best way to order stuff. Phone takes forever! Also found an
alternative to NAPA...its www.rockauto.com . When its works, their website
has an amazingly simple look-up feature per year/model. Prices much cheaper
than NAPA -- and no more hearing "our computers only go back to '64..."

The 300G is located about 3 miles from my residence. The shift button plate
looks like the one for an automatic, but the button indentations are cast
solid in the back. I have looked at the car and am not interested. Anyone
with questions please contact me privately. Doug Warrener

Has everyone on the site looked at the car on sale at E-Bay (for a short
time I must say) with item #2484398833? It claims to have original floor
shift but I thought the floor shift manual transmissions were through the
console ash tray opening. This one is through the floor on the driver's
side of the center console. Looks really strange but does have a clutch
pedal. I think the push button automatic holes have been covered but not
with a solid plate as I thought the manual tranny models contained. The
stamped vehicle data plate is shown in the photos so you experts can
determine if it really had a manual transmission at birth born. Check it
out. Maybe this is one that is not on our registry (I did not check -
sorry).

Happy 300ing.

Sincerely,

Bradley R. Teets, CPA/PFS, CFPR
