Re: [Chrysler300] Steering Wheel Restoration

Val:

As I noted in my original missive, Dennis Crooks had on display a 300 wheel
for I believe was for 59 to 61 300's. Someone correct me if they are not
all the same. Quality was outstanding but price was 900.00. I noted other
Chrysler wheels that were originally built with a somewhat
transparent/translucent appearance that he also displayed. They were shown
next to someone else's repro's. The difference in quality was substantial.

John: Mr. Crooks did tell me that it was a Windson wheel and mentioned the
lack of chroming on these wheels. However he said that the base wheel from
the Windsor was just fine for his needs to build a correct 300 wheel. He
will create the metal components and chrome them for his repro wheel. But
again 2000.00 is a tough nut but for the perfectionist with Jay Leno's
money............... Still would love to see sill plates as a club project.
Have not seen too many projects for the 55/56's over the 20 or 30 years that
I have been a club member.

Wonder what you all would pay for them. I figure that I would be happy at 3
to 5 hundred for a set.

Hi Roger & Rich,

I wanted to reply to this yesterday, but simply ran out of time. I will add
some comments below regarding my experiences in restoring steering wheels.
The site I'm listing did my Imperial wheel which is the same as any '55 or
'56 NYer, 300 or Imperial. Windsor's do not have the chrome thumb grips.
http://www.kochs.com/

These folks do Volkswagen primarily. The did a beautiful job on my black
with white grips and did not remove the chrome grips because they were in
good condition. There are no gaps as they have all been filled in right up
to the chrome rings and look perfect. I think the cost for this was around
$300 and the turn around time was quick. We even provided them with a
sample of the white and they duplicated it perfectly. The wheel is now over
two years old and looks like the day it came out of their box. I've never
done it, but I'm told the chrome thumb grips are easily removed with a screw
driver or punch from the back side and they simply pop off. Once replated
they can be epoxied back on.

Hope you find this information of some use.
