Re: [Chrysler300] Tires

Hi Gang;
I have nothing but trouble with my cocker tires. I had
returned two of them already. that was for the black portion of the outer
edge of
the started to come off. Another problem is that I cannot balance them, no
matter what we do. Moving the tire on the rims, changing wheels, and now
they are
out of round. I had no problem of returning them, but the same problem
exists.
Never again will I buy a cocker tire. and especially after reading about the
speed ratings.

What we see is that tires on stored cars will flat spot irreversibly. Tire
brand does not matter. Indexing 1/4 to 1/2 turn while stored might help.

As to tire vibration and balancing, we ran across an interesting Ford
factory fix-it bulletin last week. Thing is six pages and deals with
getting rid of an annnoying vibration/shimmy that is inheirant in their
motorhome chassis with 19.5" tires and wheels. This is interesting for a
number of reasons. First, in our shop, we have never seen any problems with
the older Ford class A chassis with steel wheels and Michelin tires. Second,
even after super matching and balancing for the allowed 4.5 warranty time
the inside 800 number to Goodyear is listed and the dealer can then order
round tires from them.

My fix: Michelin tires and alloy wheels (Alcoa) with properly sized hub
pilots. However, there is a problem with my fix and that is that the tires
and wheels do not exist. We gave the customer the bulletin and a hearty good
luck.

Part of the six page Ford fix-it scenario describes matching tires and
wheels (all 6) for runout and minium necessary balance weights. Balancing
and setting up the wheels on a road force variation tire machine ($20k+
machine so I do not have one) is also required. When all this has been
accomplished to include centering the wheels on the chassis with feeler
gauges and the thing still shakes that is when the dealer is to call
Goodyear and get the 'good', round' tires. What I read betwen the lines is
that Ford is really saying what I have seen repeatedly and that is that no
matter what is done some tires will simply not run smooth down the highway.
Even the Michelin tire on a lumpy wheel will not work either.
