Matt, the engine is designed so that the '0' on your timing plate will line
up with the single mark on the balancer when the engine is at TDC on the
number one cylinder.(assuming your balancer is still good) If you advance
the engine rotation 10 degrees based on the marking on the timing
cover(timing plate), nothing is changed with respect to ignition or cam
timing. If you are looking to take a valve lift or piston stroke measurement
at 10 degrees you could use the timing plate as a guide but a degree wheel
would be recommended. These markings on the timing cover are there for
ignition timing only with the engine running and using a timing light.
To advance or retard your ignition timing you loosen the distributor hold
down and rotate the distributor to acheive the desired advance with the use
of the timing light. Please feel free to write back to clarify what it is
you are doing.
