Don and others, 1. I, too, am not overly familiar with the 59 300-E carb, but the AFB's on my 64 300-K's also have a piston pull off that is in the aluminum casting. In rebuilding mine, starting in about '90, I found the gaskets furnished with the rebuild kits do NOT have a hole that allows vacuum to get into the piston bore to pull off the choke! 2. I learned this the hard way, with some lesser but similar symptoms, and now use a leather punch to make an appropriate hole. No longer have problems. Suspect one day to forget to punch the hole tho and be back to having it until I disassemble and correct the lack of such hole. 3. I have a carb from a 64 New Yorker--and it was equipped with the external choke pull off--and the gaskets seem to be designed for that version. I run the New Yorker carb most times on one of my 300-K's and seem to get a little better driveability in the spring and summer here in IL. 4. Would definitely like to know the final analysis of the problem--each piece of info always helps and often applies to other models/years.
