Re: VB: [Chrysler300] G question - reply

My 300G coupe had tbhe numbers inside the glove box when I bought it, but it had been painted.
My G convert has them mounted on the trunk lid.

Hello again group.

My second input in one day.... it doesn't happen to often.
Pete Fitch are right that we have discussed this several years ago.
My car has the letters on the trunk lid and it also has the 1962
emblem on the glove compartment. I was sure that was a change from
a owner before me but one of the other members told us that he had it
on his car too and he was pretty sure that have been there all the time.
We was talking about it may been if the first owner ordered the car in
some special way that this extra letters was put on but we never come to
any kind of solving the problem. Don't forget that some of the
advertising
for the G in the beginning of that sale year have the letters on the
trunk.
My car is 8413198926 so it's pretty late in the year and I know that
cars
after that don't have the letters. It's hard to believe that Chrysler
only
drilled holes in some of the 300-s and not in all if it suppose to be
letters in all cars after a specific date in manufacturing. I'll closely
follow all the inputs in this subject because this looks like a secret
for everybody.

I'm aware of at least two early G's with the F
medallion between the seats, and heard of another one
or two. Interestingly, if you've ever seen the fairly
common color magazine ad with a red G, it shows the F
gear, though it seems to be an illustration and not a
photo.

Another oddity with some early G's is the use of the
300F right side exhaust manifold with the generator
mount cut off. The use of the F gear and/or manifold
does not seem to occur in any sequence, just randomly
in the early part of production.

As far as the trunk "300" numbers go, an original
owner of a G told me he noticed them on G's in
showrooms starting around January 1961. In my
research, I've yet to document a G built in 1960 with
the trunk numbers, and most built thereafter seem to
have the numbers. PLEASE keep in mind this is a
touchy subject as many of those numbers have been
removed or put on when cars were painted later. I
would be interested in hearing about any cars that
don't agree with this and can be documented.
