The question of distinguishing between DOT 3&4 glycol-based brake fluid and DOT 5 silicone-based fluid is addressed in the Letters section of the most recent issue of Auto Restorer. Among the answers, perhaps the most useful test is to remove some of the brake fluid and add a little water. Water is miscible with the glycol fluid and will mix homogeneously, whereas it is immiscible and incompatible with the silicone fluid and will sink to the bottom as small drops. M. Albert Vannice W. Is there a way to tell the difference between the two by putting some fluid on a towel and noting color or smell or ??? I have some cars with and some without, and now I am worried.
