Hang on! I've just had a careful study of the grille without the missing up-right and I believe, at least in my case, that it has been "repaired" with a piece added by a previous owner and is not factory. Now I wonder what's been done to the hood release..ahhhhhh. Sorry for the false alarm...I'll look a little more carefully next time before crying wolf! I'll say this: there must have been a redesign of the hood release mechanism from "full grille" to "missing upright" because the later type would not function with the upright in place.
