Great questions and observations, John, and an opportunity for edification and elucidation on 1955 Chrysler 300 numbering systems. The following is from my recollection and subject to correction by the official keepers of the archives. I believe these numbering procedures continued through the 1957 model year. 1. 1955 Chrysler 300 chassis VIN's begin with 3N551001 and continue through 3N552725, for 1,725 produced. 2. 1955 Chrysler 300 engine S/N's begin with 3NE551001 and continue through 3N552XXX--I'm not aware of how many extra 300 engines were made. 3. VIN's and S/N's may match perfectly occasionally, but generally are only "close". My car has VIN 3N551198 and engine S/N 3NE551098, or 100 LESS! I don't recall the prefix system for New Yorkers, but I think it is the same, without the first digit "3", as you noted. 4. I understand all hemi blocks for Imperials, New Yorkers and 300's were designed and cast the same, and only the most choice blocks that did not require sleeving after cylinder boring (due to finding porosity in the inner walls of the cylinders) were destined to become 300 engines. Engine S/N's were not stamped on the blocks until after machining, inspection and selection were completed. I think the only engine short block differences were the camshaft and solid lifters. The VIN & S/N in the ebay ad appear to be appropriate for a 1955 C-300. Should it not be just 3N55XXXX. ? A '56 New Yorker has an E after the N and no 3 before the N. Does your '55 C300 have a 3NE55XXXX or just 3N55XXXX? (Also his VIN has no E in the picture but he responds with it having an E. Taking note of the finer points. Bidding is stuck at $8,455. Perhaps cousin Gil could verify that this is the original engine? http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1955-CHRYSLER-C-300_W0QQitemZ4629177238QQc ate goryZ6175QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem Yes thank you for the information. The serial number is 3NE551473 for the engine, and the VIN number for the car is 3NE551484. Thanks again!
