I can recall back in the late 40's, and into the 50's, my father would always 
drive with the headlights on on long distance trips.  He said this was to 
keep the battery from overcharging and "boiling" over.  When I got my driver's 
license, I did the same and still do to this day, even though it may not be 
necessary.
