Bill,
It has been my experience that when exhaust fumes are getting into the passenger compartment and the exhaust system is in good shape it was always a bad trunk lid seal.  I have replaced the seals on several different cars with this problem and it always eliminated the problem.
You can check the seal in a few different ways, but the one that was most effective for me was the paper pull test.  Cut a strip of paper about 3 inches by 11 inches.  (You can use more than one strip at a time if you have a bunch of hands to hold onto them when closing the trunk lid).  Lay the strip over the trunk seal and close the lid.  Pull the strip out, if you feel a lot of resistance, the seal is okay at that point.  Open the lid and move the paper to the left or right and try it again until you've covered the entire length of the seal.  If there is a point where the paper has little or no resistance, that is where your leak is.  Keep in mind that as you drive, there may be added air pressure in your trunk which may help push the trunk lid up and cause the seal to be broken.

could fumes be coming out the exhaust and back up into the trunk 
somehow and then the interior?

my wife is thinking about taking out an extra insurance policy on me.
