RE: [Chrysler300] Oil Filters

The question is on filters, a Mobil 1 filter can't make an engine leak more oil.

The big four in the US are Fram, Wix, Arvin Meritor, now Bosch (Purolator) and Champion. Champion makes high end filters like Mobil 1 and K & N and low end like Wal Mart Supertech and AutoZone Valuecraft. Fram, Wix and Purolator do the same, all are made to vendor specs.

Most knowledgable people stay away from Fram as their low end filters are poorly made and as expensive as better made filters such as Purolator Premium Plus for instance. Fram's better filters are about the same quality as high end Purolator or Wix, but cost 50% more on average. A Mobil 1 might be great for a 15k mile extended oil change, but I doubt any of us are going to do that with our cars. If you can stand it, the best value (IMHO) is the FL1A Motorcraft at Wal Mart. For $3 and some change you get a $6+ Pure 1 filter with some minor revisions to meet Ford specs. Be careful, the Autolite filters at Wal Mart are cheaply made Frams. Because of the former affiliation with Ford, they can be easily confused with Motorcraft(what Wal Mart hopes). Bottom line, no one's engine is going to croak before it's time using any filter that meets manufactuers specs, and is changed at 3K miles or once a year(if less).

Modern oils are designed for modern engines. Mobil 1 and other synthetics will work fine in freshly rebuilt engines with modern rings and seals. Newer oils are not made to lubricate flat tappet cams well and have detergents that are not compatible with older seals. If you have an original engine, or one rebuilt a long time ago, it is best for you to use a modern diesel oil such as Delo, Delvac or Rotella et al. 15W40 is the most common weight. 10W30 is available, but you have to look for it.

Anyone who wants to learn more can go to "Bob is the oil guy.com" website (do a Google) and learn more than they ever wanted to know about all kinds of oils, filters and additives.

What is the best brand of oil filter for our 300's? Second choice? Third choice?

Anyone using Mobil 1 in their 300's? Comments.....
