Gary, Actually, I think Fern answered your question quite well. Because these numbers are "secret", they are the last line of defense against the creation of "clones" and rebodied cars. If all info relating to these numbers is made available to the public on a totally open basis, then, to use an analogy, you've just handed the key to the safe to the thief... Please remember that any person needing to verify the authenticity of a given car can request the Club's assistance at any time, and it is always freely given. I can personally state, from personal experience, that "secret number" information has been the key to proving that certain "clones" out there are definitely fakes. And I can also tell you that, if you make that information totally public, you'll just be making it easier for unscrupulous characters to rip off people. My two cents' worth. Why the secret??? Seems the people bidding on our cars should have a way to document the authenticity of the car. I e-mailed the seller of the 1961 G convertible on E-bay with Gil's documentation, but never received an acknowledgement although I sent it as an E-bay question to the seller.. I never received an answer. That is why I ask the question, WHY THE BIG SECRET? Gary In a message dated 8/29/2006 8:04:06 P.M. These numbers are not vin numbers but rather are shown on the microfiche records that Gil Cunningham has. If everyone knew what those numbers are supposed to be, it might be too tempting to some unscrupulous people to fake these cars. I took photos of those numbers when we restored my 300H convertible.
