Hi 300 Group, I replaced the thermostat water neck gasket today on the G. The old one was Damp or weeping along the gasket area. Started the engine to warm up and check for leaks. Fired right up and on high idle for initial start up. As the engine warmed up the idle came down and checked for leaks. Shut the engine down, then attempted to restart the hot engine. Engine would barely turn over and would not fire. Attempted about five times, slow crank speed, tried to fire but would not fire. Looked like "smoke or heat" coming off the top of the engine. (Hood was up) Got out to Check engine. Coil was extremely hot to the touch. Rams were just warm. Ground wire at Negative battery terminal was extremely hot, also. Heat gauge was in the middle (not cold, not hot) Ran about 5 minutes. Radiator was hot ( 180* Thermostat ), Heads hot to the touch. Why was the coil so hot??? Have I mis-wired the coil? Switched the + and - wires on the coil when I rewired the car? Would cranking the starter and trying the start the car cause the coil to get extremely hot to the touch. The very hot Neg battery cable terminal? >From cranking the engine and not starting? ( the neg cable was NOT bolted tightly to the post, just placed on the battery terminal and twisted on) The Positive and Negative cables are new, but they look kind of "skinney". Do I need some "Fatter" battery cables. There is about 2 hours on the engine. Been only driven out of the garage and in the driveway for about 5 minutes last fall. Engine turns over readily when cold and fires right up. When the engine is hot, it turn over very slowly. does not want to fire. Seems like it's to far advanced (retarded) Do I just need some more time on the engine to get it "broken in"? Check the timing on the engine? I'm running a Mopar Performance Electronic Distributor with mechanical tach drive and no vacuum advance, (chrome box) Two Days 50* in a row and the snow is almost all gone. Great to be back in the garage. This evening a pair of geese landed in the 25 feet of open water in the lake in the back yard. 98% ice covered. Spring is here in Northern Minnesota.
