Hi to all, My previous reference was for modern replacement coils. The following is the caution that MSD carries with their coils: http://www.msdignition.com/pdf/8202_8222_8223_frm22698.pdf This abovementioned pdf sheet says the following: The Blaster Coil is designed to mount in most factory canister coil mounts...... It is recommended to mount PN 8202 and 8223 coils ~(Oil Filled)~ in an upright position. The high Vibration Coil, PN 8222, can be mounted in ANY position due to its epoxy potting compound. Sorry for any misunderstanding that anyone had to my previous post below. 300¹ly Tony 300-F conv¹t ------ Forwarded Message From: Tony Rinaldi <awrdoc@xxxxxxxxx> Date: Mon, 16 Apr 2007 11:29:25 -0400 To: Lauren Lampi <lampi300@xxxxxxx>, Chrysler 300 Club <chrysler300@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx> Conversation: [Chrysler300] 300 G Hot Coil Subject: Re: [Chrysler300] 300 G Hot Coil Hi Lauren Whatever modern replacement coil that you get should be epoxy filled. Modern oil filled coils are meant to mount vertically. They burn out when mounted horizontally. If you get an older original type coil, then oil filled is OK. Tried the 300G again this morning. Adjusted the timing a bit. Turned the distributor a little CCW. Engine turned over easily and started quickly. As usual. Wanted to check the coil as far a heating up. After running about 1 minute, I noticed that the coil was beginning to get warm. The top of the coil was beginning to warm up noticeably, while the bottom of the coil was normal temperature. (Coil in the normal, installed position on the top of the ram intake. Positive terminal + to the passenger side and Negative terminal to the drivers side.) After about 2 minutes the top of the coil is getting hotter and the bottom of the coil is still normal temp. After about 3 minutes the top of the coil is getting HOT and the bottom is getting warmer. After about 4 minutes the top of the Coil is getting VERY HOT (one second touch) and the bottom is getting warmer. Shut down the engine and let it cool down. This is a Mopar Performance Coil. Look in the parts box and find the old coil (NAPA high performance coil). Install the old coil. Fire up the engine, Play around with the timing as it warms up. Check the coil after a minute or so and it is getting warm like the other one. The top is getting hotter and the bottom is staying cooler. Shut it down and try to figure out what is going on. Why would the coil heat up after 2 to 3 minutes of running? Wiring? Ballast Resistor? Wrong Resistor? No Resistor? How hot can a coil get and still function? How Long Will it last? I need to figure out the Hot Coil and then get Fatter Cables and check out the starter. Thanks for the Help, Lauren R Lampi.
