Where cell access is possible with removable caps, best suggestion is to maintain electrolyte level above the plates and not over the 'ring'. Definately has to be above the plates but if too high will cause accelerated leakage problems. More is not better and too little is very bad. Low cost batteries it has been my long standing experience will leak more than a battery that has greater capacity, better performance and therefore costs more. Maintenance free batteries with non removable caps that I am familiar with use different cell chemistry than long history lead acid batteries and are far less prone to leakage.
