Next time it doesn?t start, try hitting the starter with a hammer or big
screwdriver?I had the same problem on my 62, bad starter, by hitting it, it
would start , something to do with parts inside (I don?t know the name in
English) getting stuck?when I got fed up of starting the car with a hammer,
I got the starter rebuilt?et voila?

One more thing - I had something similar happen on my '64 - turned out to be
a bad starter.

There were more than a couple of bad poles within the starter itself, and
almost no amount of fumbling with the ignition would start her up. I changed
to one of those high-speed starter units - Voila! Problem eliminated.

i thank all you 300 people out there / it is nice to have you all out
there.

anyway, i goes across the river 8 miles to where my car said "hell no
i'm not going to start".

i am now armed with all my new found knowledge and a friend to drive
the 300 sport home if we got it running.

we get there and the guy says why don't you just try to start it first
before we do anything...maybe it is a gremlin thing.

so, i puts in the key and bingo, it starts like a bolt of lightning.
murphys law, don't you think?

again, i thank everyone for the info...and this x chevy guy did learn
something...so all is not lost.
