The first single quad offering from Chrysler was for the Imperials in late '53 and then all '54 Imperials and New Yorkers came standard with a single 4bbl. With the introduction of Powerflite as an option in late '53 Imperials and Chryslers, the new "short" bellhousing configuration was required to come into production. So late '53 with Powerflite were "short" and cars continuing to employ the old Fluid-Torque drive and manual transmissions continued to be "long" (extended bellhousing block) as they had been since introduction of the Chrysler hemi in '51. For '54 there were still Fluid-Torque drive trans to use up, so some '54 Chryslers (don't know if Impl got any) in the early part of the year continued to have 'long' bell housings for these transmissions. Curiously, only the 331 hemi as used in Chrysler and Imperial had the long bellhousing. When DeSoto introduced their hemi for the '52 model year, it was the short design and the same held true when Dodge intro'd their hemi in '53. Sum: there never were long DeSoto or Dodge blocks. The Chrysler /Impl 331" was introduced long in '51 and was phased out in early '54. The Chrysler /Impl short 331" went into production late in '53 to include the new Powerflite. The first US cars with a single 4bbl carburetor were Buick and Cadillac for 1952.
