RE: [Chrysler300] 300 D AC finshing touches!......& Fuel Pump issues!!

Thanks Henry,

A fellow Aussie!

I believe that the '57 had two bowls, one at each inlet of the carbs,
whilst the '58 had the single bowl on the underside of the pump. The
Kanter pump looks real close! But believe me, painfully they ain't the
goods!! Be very careful on this one. I am still yet to receive a reply
from Kanter on this issue.

Thanks for lead on Mitchell Motors. Had a few other good list member
leads on rebuilders of these parts. But if you don't have a spare core,
it's a problem with rebuilders.

You can probably back me up on the degree of difficulty added due to the
fact that we are on the opposite side of the world to where all these
parts reside!

Regards

Sean

Hello Sean

Would you mind letting me know if someone puts you onto a good source
for new fuel pumps or kits. My 300C has a pump with a glass fuel bowl
underneath which apparently is "wrong" for a '57. It may be for a '58
considering they are both 392s but I don't know how to tell. I haven't
started the engine yet but it looks like it has been on there a long
time and would probably have been working on the engine years ago when
it was last running. I therefore will leave it until I get the engine
going but knowing where to get a good replacement 57 model or a 58 kit
would be helpful.

For a heater valve you could try Mitchell Motor Parts at www.mmpar.com.
They are expensive but had a NOS one for my 57 non A/C. However, I
bought another one on ebay for an 59 AMC. It is virtually identical and
was $100 cheaper.

Cheers

Hello out there in 300 land!

Had the D completed for an important Chrysler event down under last
weekend! All was well, fully detailed, with 150 miles on the clock and
not an issue, Then.......Failed fuel pump and unfortunately then the
eccentric, on the way to the event!!

I sourced the pump from Kanters, after providing details & year of the
car, and they furnished what I believed to be an original style & fit
pump with the '58 fuel bowl underside. It went in easy, probably on the
low side of the eccentric in retrospect, but pumped like a champion
without any noise or issue for at least 150 miles. I figured it was
perfect! The horrible reality was that I think it was bottoming out in
the block pump arm cavity slightly, but this was loading up the
eccentric on the high side, until ultimately the pump arm had a radius
1/8" deep worn into it, and a similar groove in the eccentric, until the
eccentric failed and cut loose inside!

The wear was very uniform, and the pump was engaging the eccentric
squarely, even a professional mechanic didn't question its
function........until now!!

Rather tragic when you have a fully restored car stranded in the middle
of no mans land! I am sure many can relate to this however.

Has any body had any similar experiences with Kanter sourced pumps? Any
ideas on the correct and best original style pump to obtain?

I would hope this might act as a warning to other unsuspecting victims
of these pumps, which look the part, but aren't!

Also, would any body have source or ideas for rebuilt AC heater taps,
along for the oil control solenoid that controls the damper? Both mine
are leaking respectively.

I am also chasing the little fill in piece in the middle of the lower
inside window garnish, the matt black one on top of the dash for a '58.
kind of where the '57 mirror mount goes.

Regards

Sean in OZ
