My muffler guy has been in the business for many years and pointed out that for true originality, the exhaust pipes should be the plain old muffler grade carbon steel that rusts instantaneously as even aluminized steel as used now was not invented until fairly recently. I'm going to go with standard diameter aluminized steel and hope the judges do not conduct spectrographic analysis of the metal. Last time they judged the bottom side of my nasty old '55 C-300, I got enough demerits to take me out of the judging. Pretty pipes do look good and I don't think larger pipes will have much effect on normal operation. I think I've seen pictures of the Kiekhaefer cars with 4" pipes running straight through the trunk and exiting about where backup lights would have been (on Windsors, New Yorkers and Imperials, only). I'll bet those cars really cackled!
