The EPA's involvement is to reduce or eliminate zinc in lube oil as it eventually passes through a cat converter and poisons it-just like lead. EPA wants a 140,000 mile cat converter instead of an 85,000 mile life-or something like that. Somewhere amongst the links I have I do seem to recall seeing that the EPA is a factor on all this.
