After looking at original air cleaner and valve cover golds for many many years, I am convinced there is certainly a varience. This may be due somewhat to ageing or to a genuine difference in paint. I doubt having the super exact shade of gold was a real high priority in production. (Black is black and Engine Gold is gold---perhaps?) Therefore, in concours we have never been too awfully picky on the gold---at least I hope not. Certainly the "wet look" gloss would earn some deductions. When I worked at Chrysler, I did try to find a master color chip for this color but, unfortunately, was not successful. Early in my tenure there (late '63 or '64) I wanted to obtain the correct gold to paint my newly aquired 300C's air cleaners. I was given an address to go to south of Jefferson Avenue near the river and received a 1/2 pint can of BRONZE POWDER. I mixed that with whatever they said to use and thus painted the air cleaners. I still have that can and am looking at it now, but the paper label is too deteriorated to read. I am sure the paint company has long since gone out of business or been absorbed. (Address was 12815 Elmwood Ave, Cleveland 11, Ohio.) At any rate, we do not have an "official" engine gold master. Perhaps someone with a good selection of original covers and filters would agree to compare them with a sample of the 452 and a sample of the paint Michael Meyer had formulated. If the Meyer formulation is closest to most, then as Terry McTaggart suggests, we could have Tower Paint make it up in spray cans. Otherwise, just use the 452. (By the way, Owen, I think I missed the mfr. of the 452 in the emails somewhere. Who is it?) 300ly, Gil Cunningham Tallahassee, FL In a message dated 4/4/2008 9:11:21 PM Eastern Daylight Time, ram300@xxxxxxxxxx writes: Hi Rich, Attached are pics of my 300C original paint/decal air cleaners alongside a spray can of the 452 they're all referring to. It's a close match, but you would definitely have to matt it out as these air cleaners are NOT a full gloss. The 10 coats of clear that some apply or the "wet look" is not correct in my opinion. The valve covers were sprayed with the 452 paint some years ago. The engine block remains in what's left of the original paint. Your '55 looks good! Wayne and Gil may be able to comment?
