I live in CT and know Bridgeport well.  Sadly, the town is currently
pretty much as described.  I have to admit (and not trying to stir up
trouble), I kept waiting for the story to talk of his dad's first letter
car purchase or some other strong reference to a letter car.  It never
came.  I was a bit surprised.
 
Not my first, but my most memorable letter car siting: I was on Cape Cod
with my wife many years ago.  We were walking along a road in South
Dennis when a white F coupe whooshed by us making almost no sound at
all.just stirring up a breeze as she cruised on by.  It was the first
day of our two-week vacation and I spent the next 13 days trying to find
that 300F looking in drive ways, walking and driving down little side
streets..  I never did see it again.

I hate to admit it, but I was born in Bridgeport CT in 1955 and grew up
there until my parents were able to save up enough money to escape to
the suburbs.

My recollection matches that of Charley to a T. My dad worked in the
Bridgeport Brass company (as did I for one summer), and my mom worked at
Columbia Records. My grandfather worked at Remington Arms, and we all
lived in "Success" Park, which was basically a WPA program holdover. All
of those businesses closed decades ago, and the city is but a shell. 

I found it a very entertaining read, and will pass a copy along to my
relatives who still live in the Stratford area.
