I recently buffed up a 57 Chrysler rear screen. It wasn't in the best shape, due to a scratch and a rock chip. But it now looks ten times better. I used a 7 inch sander / buffer, set on slow speed. I rethreaded a buffing spindle that normally attaches to a bench grinder, to match it's mounting thread. Then a stitched or loose cloth mop, of 5 or so inches diameter, threads onto the tapered spindle. Best to cut off the protruding spike of the spindle, from the buff pad, once fitted, to minimize a big accident resulting in no window. Maybe also cap the end of the spindle with a rubber tip. Then feed a hard white buffing block of cutting compound, that is made for polishing stainless onto the rotating pad and then go evenly and not too concetrated for long in one spot, to eliminate too much heat in an area. You'll need the extra screw in handgrip, to maximize control of this setup. This is one way to transform reasonable or even bad glass or dull stainless, into something of much better appearance. As with buffing paint, avoid sharp edges and hooking up. Often better to do alot of this work, without removing the part, from your car, it is usually adequately supported while attached, check that it is firstly. This is the way I've been doing the job for years and never had any problem. Must do's are keeping your eye on the power lead, you don't want that hooking up around your buff. This way is probably only advisable, for power outlets, supported by a power cutoff trip switch. Much care is required, wear a dust mask and eye protection etc. This might solve a problem for a few members, in getting glass and stainless looking alot better.
