[Chrysler300] Air compressor question

Hi to all,
1960 Chrysler with 1962 air set up and alternator:
When compressor kicks on, the belts start flopping.
Is compressor in need of rebuild or is this normal?
When compressor is not activated, belts are OK and adjusted as tight as
possible without too much pressure on alternator.
