Apparently several manufacturers have made a T-50 model gas turbine. Here is a picture of a Boeing T-50, rated at 330HP. Solar also made a T-50 Taurus gas turbine in the 70's but it was probably on the order of 3500HP. I saw some references to T-50 turbines in helicopters and Russian tanks, also. http://www.geocities.com/hobbyturbines/ A 1,000HP Solar Saturn gas turbine would fit nicely in a Chrysler 300 engine compartment and they had gearboxes for them that would enable them to drive slow-moving reciprocating pumps. They operate at the 22,000 RPM figure cited. Gas turbines typically provide lower cost and lower weight horsepower, but fuel economy is difficult and expensive to attain from small gas turbines. Noise, poor fuel economy, emission issues and massive volumes of hot exhaust gas make operation of gas turbines in Chrysler 300's on city streets unfeasible with current technology. But, I would not be surprised to see a small gas turbine/electric motor hybrid car evolve in the future. Gas turbines are flexible in RPM and load, but work best and most efficiently in a narrow range and that could be driving a generator. Chrysler gave gas turbines the old college try in the '50's to '80's according to Wikipedia: American car manufacturer Chrysler demonstrated several prototype gas turbine-powered cars from the early 1950s through the early 1980s. Chrysler built fifty Chrysler Turbine Cars in 1963 and conducted the only consumer trial of gas turbine-powered cars.[7] Their turbines employed unique rotating recuperator that significantly increased efficiency. Those '63's looked a lot like T-Birds, but would have made an interesting 300-I, especially if Kiekhaefer had bought a six-pack of them and gone racin'??? Andy Granatelli and Parnelli Jones just about pulled off an Indy win in '67 in a turbine powered car. I wonder if that gearbox had STP in it??? Indy rules soon precluded gas turbines, much as NASCAR rules precluded Chrysler hemi letter cars. For open wheel racing, 1967's revolutionary STP Oil Treatment Special four-wheel drive turbine-powered special fielded by racing and entrepreneurial legend Andy Granatelli and driven by Parnelli Jones nearly won the Indianapolis 500; the STP Pratt & Whitney powered turbine car was almost a lap ahead of the second place car when a gearbox bearing failed just three laps from the finish line. Stay tuned, film at 11.
