My body shop convinced me to have my 58 Plymouth painted in base/clear. Their argument was that chips were easier to repair. As it turns out, I scratched an area about one half inch square in the course of mounting the front bumper. I also removed a similar amount near the door latch while aligning the door. The car is a non-metallic color, BTW. For all you painters out there: If this had been painted in single stage, how difficult would it be to repair the damage to the point where the scratch was not visible ?
