RE: [Chrysler300] 57 heater control valve



No magic wand here Gary, only sharing my successful personal experience with
rebuilding an earlier valve of this type, not a '57. Having said that, I
just looked at a spare '61 valve and it appears to be very similar.   Didn't
use any hammer and chisel either, just some thin screwdrivers and a needle
nose pliers, only bent the tabs as far as necessary to get it apart as I
recall, but it has been a while.  Bead blasted it, sprayed it with clear
Nyalac, reassembled and tested it for leaks with a heater hose hooked up to
a faucet.  Maybe I just got lucky.

More on heater control valves.

Unless Bob J. has a magic wand, bending those little tabs is not as easy as
said. The 4 tabs are segments of a circle and must be precisely straightened
before you can remove from the base plate. I machined special tooling that
allows to lift the tabs. Another tool that flattens the 4 tabs to the proper
radius so the base plate can be removed. Then there is another set of tools
that progressively spread the tabs until they are flattened and clinched
down to complete the seal. Do NOT try to rebuild with a hammer and chisel.

By the way the capillary tube function will likely be useless. After 50 +
years the gas has dissipated. When they worked the gas expanded, pushed up a
piston and closed off the water flow based on the set temperature of the
slide control. You will have to rely solely on the slide control for temp
comfort.

There is a guy in CA that does the rebuilds. They where $69 for a long time,
may be more now. He does nothing for the capillary tube. Just the seal.

If any one wants to see progress photos of 57 valve I have rebuilt, mail me
and I will send file photos.

Bill,

There are kits available that include the rubber diaphragm that allow you
to
rebuild the valve. The valve is disassembled by bending the little tabs
that hold it together, and basically you clean everything up, put in the
new
diaphragm and reassemble. There are companies that will do this for you
also, and that may be a simpler way to go.

New valves are also available, (check NAPA) there are some issues with the
new valves however. The issues are that they are steel, not brass, and
they
do not include the temperature sensing bourdon tube the originals came
with.
I would rebuild the original if it were my car, as I have had both and
prefer the original. Others may have a source for the kit and/or
rebuilders
but you might try looking in Hemmings or Google search. My car is a 300G
so
I can't say for sure the '57s had the bourdon tube, but I'll bet they did.

one of the many things to improve or still fix in the first place is my
heater control valve / it leaks badly.

so, i finally have it out of the car and it looks like trouble trouble
trouble / rusty and carroded.

are they fixable or do ya replace them suckers?

or do ya block them off and close one eye?
