In 1988, there were six grades of unleaded and one grade of leaded available. Since a letter car with hardened valve seats (or for instance, a Toyota) would run on unleaded, I will stick to that only. The 'standard' three grades available at the time are the grades available today: 87 octane, 89 octane and 91 octane. The car in question would run on 87 octane. Just to be clear, the other two commercially available grades were Sunoco only: 93.5 and 86 (a cheaper alternative to 87 'regular'). They still carry the 93.5 at some locations but I think have long since discontinued the lower grade 86 (knocking and other issues). Good luck. Check your catalytic converter if you have run any leaded or lead additives.
