Dan, Yes, and many "outsiders" think of sex when they hear the name of the town is Intercourse. The truth is, most of these small towns, including Intercourse, Blue Ball and Paradise were actually the names of taverns and inns along the trails leading to and from Philadelphia and Harrisburg. Blue Ball Tavern, Paradise Tavern, White Swan Tavern, etc. The name Intercourse came about because Intercourse Tavern was?erected at the intercourse (intersection) of?Philadelphia Pike and Newport Road, which are now PA routes 772 and 340. These taverns were erected along the trails at random intervals based on how long a person or buggy could travel between rest stops. As these taverns became more popular, others built their homes and businesses along these routes and thus, a town was born and the names stuck because the populus was aware of the locations of the taverns and inns.?
