  Back when, the idea was to let the A/C compressor run constantly. So that  evaporator temperature does not get below 32 deg F and freeze up, the modern A/C system cycles the compressor and does not need EPR or ETR valves or the like.

  As needed to keep the coil from freezing, the EPR or ETR control valve throttles down refrigerant flow. Refrigerant pressure is directly related to temperature and that's what either valve does, regulate pressure on the suction side. 

  Any part can wear out. Contamination, like dirt or moisture, can goof up refrigeration valves.   

  Any system that was designed to operate on Refrigerant 12 will always operate best on that refrigerant. No other refrigerant will provide equivalent cooling performance.

  R-134A refrigerant requires different lubricants and operates at significantly higher pressures than what is normal for R-12 systems. Anything rubber (and the receiver drier)  designed originally for R-12 does not like R-134A. There is not one (not even a 1/2 one) performance benefit in an R-12 to R-134A swap.

  System control valves for a R-12 system were designed to work with the characteristics of R-12 only.

  What does the ETR valve do? Is it part of the AC system? Is it compatable with R134A? Do they ever go bad?
