I agree, you should never run old tires at high speeds. As soon as they get hot you may experience cord separation especially in radials. I have had lots of problems with radials when they were first introduced. I lost all four radial tires (Goodyear JR78/14) on our 300C on the trip through the mountains of northern California to attend the August 1980 Chrysler 300 Club 11th Annual Meet in Santa Cruz, California. I received the "Hard Luck" Award plus a Second Place, Senior Division. I lost two radials on the way to and two on the return trip. The tires had just 10,000 miles and were five years old. The cords separated from the rubber compounds. Goodyear gave me new tires, but I was never happy with them. The gist of the article was that any tire more than three or four years old should not be sold to the public without notice of the age of the tire because, over time, tires will dry out and the side walls become subject to cracking under load. I, for one, would not be doing more than 40-50 mph on original Blue Streaks, if that. I think they should be used for shows and for concours judging, but I would never put them to high speed use. How can you trust a 30 or 40 year old tire at 80 - 100 mph??? Pete Fitch In a message dated 3/5/2009 11:54:05 A.M.
