Fw: [Chrysler300] Classic Car Appraisals

Ed,
I agree that most appraisals are used for insurance purposes. I believe every modification on this particular car were done in the last few years, and a quick look would probably reveal an AAJ kit with GM calipers, or maybe 1970s-vintage Mopar disc brake components. I beleive some other Club members commented on the wheels - Chrysler used 300-J wheelcovers on 15" wheels on each car in every picture I've seen of the Pace Cars on the track taken in 1963.
I think the appraiser in this case suffers from some serious misinformation, and cannot document what he wrote down.
The seller should be happy to exceed $10K for the auctioned car - but who knows what he actually thinks it's worth?

Some appraisals are not worth the paper they are written on - I once took a car to an appraiser and he asked me what it was worth? I said that is what I came to him to find out - he replied that most people get appraisals for insurance purposes so they (that particular appraiser) are flexible. I am sure there are other Appraisers who do a good job and know the market value of specific models - lots of times they are specialists in certain cars that they know inside out - but I don't know how you would get $352,000 as opposed to 350,000 - why not $351,950 or ??? for such a unique car as a documented 1 of 10 real Pace Car.

If it is documented as one of the cars that actually paced Indy, that would be difficult to put a value on, but it would add significantly - but if its just one of the multiple PaceSetter models that were sold by dealers, thats another thing entirely. I saw a decent, but not great 63 PaceSetter go for about $10k at auction this year.

As to mods, I would think they would be desirable as a driver, but if not documented from factory, I would think they would subtract substantially from the value of a correct, documented Pace Car. Disc brakes were available for first time on production cars in 66 and dual circuit brakes did not come out til 67 - are these factory prototype (and documented as such) or are they modifications by subsequent owner?

I am surprised that is shows a 383 but no A/C to reduce HP losses - would not it have made more sense to use the 413 for the actual Pace Cars? I kind of think its not one of the ones actually used at Indy but seller may not be aware that the PaceSetter models were sold in quantity.

Surely someone on this list can tell you what is correct for the actual cars used at Indy and WAG a value, but I agree its unlikely to be $352,000.

best, Ed

I say lightly modified, as it has dual-circuit brakes and a front disc brake conversion. Here's a link to the auction: http://tinyurl.com/63-300-sport <http://tinyurl.com/63-300-sport>
