Does it backfire and stumble other than from a dead stop? Like under heavy acceleration or hitting passing gear. If it does it under these conditions as well, would change the condenser in the distributor and retry. Cured my problem in my '56 NYer that bucked and backfired a few years ago. I can't remember what I did to overcome the problem, but you might try adjusting the carb per the instruction in the service manual. Like you ,I had the carbs rebuilt by an expert but they need to be adjusted "by the book". You might also look for a vacuum leak - try the hose from the intake manifold to the power brake booster. The backfire should also be a clue to what is wrong - perhaps someone else may have an idea about that.
