I asked Diamond Back Classics a few questions about their tires, received a good reply and obtained permission to share it with you. I knew speed ratings existed for newer tires, but did not know these ratings were for a continuous 24-hour period. All of the tires mentioned have OD?s slightly less than the approximately 29? on the original 8.00 X 15 Blue Streaks that came on our 1955 C-300. I?ve thought about tuning up our Brute for a timed speed run at Bonneville or the Dry Lakes and have been wondering about which tire might be safe enough in case the old Brute could still do around 130 MPH. Technically, I?d need an H rated tire, although I might be OK with an S or T tire. Are your tires rated for those occasional high speed bursts I read about here? My old Remington's seem to hold together OK ay 80-85 MPH, but that does not mean they are good for 24 hours, or even 24 seconds. It seems that radial tire size of 225/75R15 is the closest match for the 8.00 x 15. Anyone running 215's or 235's? Below is a table I found on the internet at: http://www.dunntire.com/Learning_Center/Tire_Speed_Ratings It does not translate well to plain text. An early wish for a Merry and 300'ly Christmas. Rich Barber Brentwood, CA 1955 Chrysler C-300 Tire speed ratings do not imply that vehicles can be safely driven at the maximum speed for which the tire is rated, particularly under adverse road and weather conditions, or if the vehicle has unusual characteristics. Never operate a vehicle in an unsafe or unlawful manner. SPEED SYMBOL MAXIMUM SPEED APPLIES TO PASSENGER CAR TIRES APPLIES TO LIGHT TRUCK TIRES * above 149 mph (240 km/h) YES - Y** 186 mph (300 km/h) YES - W** 168 mph (270 km/h) YES - V (with service description) 149 mph (240 km/h) YES - H 130 mph (210 km/h) YES YES U 124 mph (200 km/h) YES YES T 118 mph (190 km/h) YES YES S 112 mph (180 km/h) YES YES R 106 mph (170 km/h) - YES Q 99 mph (160 km/h) - YES P 93 mph (150 km/h) - YES N 87 mph (140 km/h) - YES M 81 mph (130 km/h) YES Temporary Spare Tires - *For tires having a maximum speed capability above 149 mph (240 km/h), a "ZR" may appear in the size designation. For tires having a maximum speed capability above 186 mph (300 km/h), a "ZR" must appear in the size designation. Consult the tire manufacturer for maximum speed when there is no Service Description. Example: P275/40R17 93W at 168 mph (270km/h) or P275/40ZR17 at above 149 mph (240 km/h). Consult tire manufacturer. **A "ZR" may appear in the tire size designation. NOTE: For "V", "W", or "Y", and tires with a "ZR" rating, a vehicle load adjustment (for speed) is required; consult tire manufacturer. Rich Barber Brentwood, CA ________________________________________ From: Diamond Back Classics [mailto:wwtires@xxxxxxxxxxx] Sent: Monday, December 07, 2009 9:49 AM To: Richard Barber Subject: RE: MX Tire specs The dimensions for the MX 235/75R15 are 28.9" tall, 6.5 " tread width and a section width of 9.3". The speed rating is T, which is 118 mph. (speed ratings are the speed at which the tire can run for 24 hours without building up excessive heat to the point of failing). Michelin doesn't make a 225/75R15 in the models we use for our MX model. Since we add white walls to modern radials from the major manufacturing companies we are limited to models they sell in North America. Michelin does make a 225/75R15 in a light truck/SUV tire - a LTX M/S. This model is S speed rated (112 mph). With 3" whitewalls these will cost $240.00 each plus shipping. A speed rating of U is rated for 124 mph and a H is rated at 130 mph. I could not find any higher speed rating than a T for either the 225/75R15 or a 235/75R15 in any brand. The Fury is S speed rated and is 28.1" tall with a 5.6" tread width and a 8.8" section width. The AS4 is T speed rated and is 28.3" tall with a 6.2" tread width and a 8.8" section width. The Michelin LTX M/S is 28.3" tall (supplier 's website doesn't list a tread width) with a 9" section width. Modern radials are ply rated (not actual number of plys) and the higher ply ratings indicate the tires have a "re-enforced" bead to withstand higher inflation rates. Either the Michelin or the AS4 inflated to 44 psi could easily replace the 6 ply rated tire. And unless you are going to be running some 24 hour endurance races, they should also handle your speed requirements. I understand you are trying to duplicate what came on the car, but modern radials construction is so different from bias ply tires that comparing the ratings are basically meaningless when it comes to performance. Our business is customizing modern radials to give them the look of the past with the quality of performance of today for people that need safe tires to drive on. When find that reproduction tires are only safe on cars that are trailered and seldom driven at modern highway speeds. Any reason you skipped from 215/75R15 to 235/75R15 with the MX? It seems the 225/75R15 size is most appropriate for old Chrysler 300?s. Dimensions and speed rating for Fury 225/75R15 and AS4 225/75R15 also requested. I?m looking for a 129 MPH tire, roughly equivalent to the 8.00 x 15 Goodyear 6-ply nylon Blue Streaks that came on our 1955 Chrysler C-300. Original WSW width 3?. Thanks for any light you can shed.
