My C300 has underbody and underhood undercoating. VIN 3N55 1198. Not very pretty, but the underhood undercoating is still in good shape. It is thinly applied over the sheet metal and braces and clear to the back of the hood. Must have been pretty good stuff. The underbody undercoating is peeling, but did its job protecting the frame and floor. When judged, the car lost beaucoupe points down under for ugly and dirty. The topside of the trunk floor also appears to have been coated with similar undercoating. Is this consistent with others? I had some guidance that all or most '55 300's were undercoated unless shipped to a dry climate such as CA or AZ. So, I'm wondering if this was standard practice, a dealer checkoff or undercoat delete as a number of '55 300's seem to have dirty gray-black paint on the underside of the hood and '56's hood undersides seem to be more likely to be body color. Our car was originally shipped to the Chrysler dealership in Roswell, New Mexico where a UFO had supposedly crashed in 1947. I guess this makes our car an Undercoated Fast Object. In a couple of weeks, our car will be 55 years old and eligible for early retirement. No gifts, please--cards only. But like many senior citizens, our car can still get up and go and cleans up pretty good. It was built 3/12/55 (interestingly, enough on a Saturday) and shipped on St. Paddy's day 3/17/55. A pretty nice NC 1955 C-300 is being auctioned at e-Bay: http://tinyurl.com/ykux4d9 13 bids to $25K, buy it now $39.5K, VIN 3N551190-probably built the same week as ours. Interesting read at the auction site, including a link to our website. A quick look showed no C-300's belonging to members of either club in NC. As I thought I remembered, it is covered with a evenly applied coat of asphaltic "undercoat" type material. It is not as thick as the car's regular undercoat beneath its floor. This car has never been "restored" or even fixed up. I honestly don't think anyone but the factory would have applied this material. I am wondering if the underhood spray-on "silencer" material was only applied when the car came with full undercoating. Such was the case with the 300K with its mechanically retained hood silencer. Well, thought I would throw this out for what it is worth. 300ly, Gil Cunningham Still c-c-cool, Tallahassee, FL In a message dated 12/23/2009 3:59:42 P.M.
