RE: [Chrysler300] ebay as a worthy 300 research means?

Ryan makes somme good points in his reply attached below, and if one takes that with what also just said by Ray Jones, one can make one's own mind up about best ways to research 300, other marque, needed parts.

One thing I perhaps did not make clearer in my original post, is that start with any photos in an ebay listing. If the item looks the same in the various ebay listings for the same item, one is chasing, then one can then go to the included words/copy.

But as warned by others, never take the words as true/correct - you must decide if they are - and that is where ebay is great, because you have photos plus words on each listing. Then you have the sellers feedback, plus if they list other bidders questions and responses. But only decide after taking all that in if the seller knows what he is talking about, saying. Plus as Ray suggests, you can click on both similar 'completed items', plus there is in a 'click on' drop down box, with a 'view similar listed options' icon on the extreme right of the unopened item listing.

Sorry to go through this topic to all those who likely know all there is to know re ebay already - use it if it helps, and for those who don't, there are still the old familar swap meets, classifieds and all the former means apart from Club sources. But even if wishing to use those 'old tech' methods, ebay still can give you a few pointers re traps and options avaliable, especially for 'non early 300' parts chasers, where sought items are much more commonly listed, than those often too rare early 300 sought after parts?

Christopher Australia - our amazing/terrible weather just continues - yesterday most of south east corner of nation got rain up to 6 inches in the day, where in summer it real unusual if once in ever 10-20 yrs they get over an inch of rain, plus in Capital City Melbourne, all that rain in just hours plus golf balls the size up to lemons!!!! - nearly bought down hundreds million dollar mega footy stadium roof !!!! - hail never ever this bad ever - go to Youtube, visuals of like river flooded the main city centre, hail swept into piles near foot deep. Damage in Melb already stated over $1billion dollars in just few hours, versus only maybe third that losses in flooding that covered near the whole of Queensland - just one Melb car yard alone over $10m of cars written off by hail.

I don't dispute ebay being one of many sources to determine a market value of a particular item and in some cases learn a little about some parts and/or cars. I would however consider this club and other Chrysler clubs members as the best sources of 'accurate' information when researching anything 300 related. If I want information on my Charger, I go to Charger and B-body sources. Doing your homework using the right sources makes the task easier and gives you the tools required to deal on parts and/or cars with confidence.

It's important to remember, 'just because you read it on the internet, doesn't mean it's true'....always consider the source. How many times have we read published articles about cars we personally know a great deal about and discovered countless errors by the author? My point is, there are alot of people out there that have been misled by the information they have received and are now passing that on as the truth. I often send messages to sellers on ebay who have made errors in their listings, almost always it's received with thanks. I would hope that if I made a mistake on a listing, someone would point that out to me. For honest sellers and buyers, this just makes it easier to complete a transaction where everybody is happy.

There has been plenty of comment already re the seeming mislisted 300 Sport, but couple of things re ebay I have found excellent has not yet been covered, so before everyone finally says goodnight to this topic here it is.

1) contacting a lister with a listing error is good, because I, and no doubt other, learning 'car parts' chasing collector car owners, often use ebay as a beginning point before finding/buying a particular needed part. (Hope I have not lost you on that one)

Where ebay can be a great help, is to check listings for identical items you might need. So firstly, if there is an error, it helps buyers avoid buying something they later find out is wrong, and then have the hassle/cost of returning it, or getting in disputes re solving it.

As a '300 related' 'using ebay for research' simple example - 1957 300Cs had red tailight lenses with identifying raised little letters at the bottom. Non genuine, but old stock, lenses were also made, and they carry different letters. Purists might want the Factory lettered lenses, whereas as a daily user might not care. The non genuine lenses finish/end/sell usually for way less - if you follow these lenses, some sellers note, make special mention, that theirs have the genuine factory lettering if they indeed do, which means they should be the originals, not the aftermarket type. If you are restoring a 300C, and want the genuine, with luck, you will have noticed two types of lenses appear on ebay, and then have read which ones are correct - then you buy whichever suits your needs?! Rather than buy the wrong cheaper ones, to only find out later they are wrong if you are a purist?!

Another example is there were multiple different 300C aircleaner housings, and if photos are included with ebay listings, you miight notice the different backing plate pressings. Sellers on a way rarer item like these, often don't know this, but if you notice differences, you can then ask on Club site why is this, and which ones are likely correct for your build date?

2) the other good thing about following ebay listings for parts you will need in the future, is comment re possible 'repo' equivalents. Good ebay listers will often comment on an item where there is a poor quality repo equivalent available - like they might say "note this original part has the raised centre ridge in the chrome that factory originals had, but a particular repo hasn't" - or - " this is not Asian repo rubbish that is only repo item available currently, but this is an original factory item, and will bolt straight up, unlike the repo which is wrong fit at ..... " - or any number of things you learn for free.

Enough comment re ebay - it has it's faults when things go wrong. But even if not thinking of buying on ebay, I have found it so brilliant to 'learn more before I buy' from wherever is often put in the words of some listings, especially if it a part you are totally missing. How often does one find/buy a part you think will fit because it is off same brand, same year, etc, but it totally wrong. ( Like a 300 hemi water pump '56 -57 era, it totally different to an '56-57 Imperial water pump. GM is a mongrel company re doing this on so many motor other bolt on parts that look same but have key small casting other bit differences according to how optioned - and yes our 392 300Cs even had different heads, drilled and undrilled, for aircond or not, so GM/they all did it maybe?!)

So back to topic of contacting sellers - for my money, contact the ebay seller with wrong detail by all means. Because if he then corrects his listing, what the contactor has told him, if then included in the listing as a correction, then educates others looking at such an item as to 'what makes a 300 a 300', or just a Sport.

And others may comment better on this other point, but I think re ebay heading listings, I don't think ebay alows changes to major parts such as that, only changes/corections in lower down copy? O/wise it must be removed, totally relisted?!

As I said ebay has it's problems, just go with, use, what works for you. And if a seller refuses to change his listing, we all know he one to avoid in future?!

Christopher Australia - massive flooding in Qld outback occurring today, maybe worst in some towns since us white fellars arrived there over 150 yerars ago. 80% of Qld now declared flood area - and Qld is about 20% of total area of Australia

I have thought about it, and if someone is offering a car for sale in a
public forum, and if there is misrepresentation, knowingly or unknowingly, I
see no problem with advising the seller and/or sharing the information found
with the list. Auctions are public forums and should stand up to scrutiny.
By the way, I also sign my emails.

How come everytime a 300 comes up for auction on Ebay it becomes a punching
bag for our club. Have you ever thought the owner may just like cars but not
know much about them ? Or that he may even be a club member ?
You are all doing the exact same thing that the IDIOT did that J. Lazenby
spoke about in his posting on this subject.
Think about it...
