Years ago, on the advice of an old timer I used a bar of yellow laundry soap to fix a leak in a gas tank on the very bottom. Cut up part of the bar into small pieces, made a thick paste of the soap and some water and pressed it on and let it dry. It was supposed to be a temporary fix, but it was still there a couple of years later when the car was sold. It had been through some serious puddles and splashings and never let go.
